Relationship to Diabetes
Parent
Hi, I'm a parent of a 13 year old daughter with Type 1. She's had it nearly 3 years now and has always had a positive attitude to this condition. We try to keep conversations light, but I always answer honestly when she wants to know anything about Diabetes. She decided, early on, that it was a tiny part of her and that there was more to her than this title.

Hi Jacqui, welcome to the forum 🙂 It sounds as though your daughter has a very mature and sensible approach to managing and living with her diabetes. There is nothing she can't accomplish as long as she takes the time to monitor her levels and eat appropriately. We have lots of people here who are testament to that, and I'm sure they will be happy to share their experiences with you and your daughter 🙂

I was diagnosed Type 1 much later in life, aged 49, but I ran in the Great South Run a few months later and continue to have a full and healthy life - possibly healthier than it would have been without the diagnosis!

Do you have a copy of Ragnar Hanas' Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults? If not, I'd urge you to get a copy as it covers so many situations and questions and is a very readable and accessible guide to living with diabetes, particularly (as the title suggests!) for young people 🙂

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - we have lots of great parents here who will be happy to share experiences with you.

hi jacqui, and welcome to the forum

Hi Jacqui welcome to the forum. It sounds like your daughter has a great attitude to living with the big d! I've had it for almost 20 years, I'm 22, and that's pretty much my attitude to it too - it's part of me, but it isn't all of me!
