Morning, was diagnosed with T2 a few days ago. I've looked for advice on net but am getting conflicting answers. Is it OK to have a jacket potato or should I avoid like the plague? If ok, do I have to weigh it to calculate carbs...
(Not seen diabetic nurse yet)
Many thanks
Sand

Many people eat jacket potatoes, you’ll get some here who avoid them as they eat low carb though. As you don’t test bgs yet you’ll have no idea whether it works for you or not.

You could make it a small jacket potato and have a low carb filling eg chilli or tuna or cheese, and veg or salad on the side.

One of the challenges with a jacket is that the cooking (especially if done on the oven) significantly reduces the size and makes it harder to estimate the amount of carbs involved by eye (or weight) once cooked - because lots of the water had disappeared, so the carbs are more concentrated.

There really aren’t any forbidden foods in my opinion - just ones which work better for you frequently at portion sizes that make sense… and others that your body seems to absorb at lightning speed and which are better saved for more occasional treats, or eaten in much smaller quantities. 🙂

Remember, providing you are not trying to lose weight, that those jacket potatoes can be slathered in butter! For diabetes, fats don't count.....!!

Hi @sandsam and welcome to the forum.

I was diagnosed T2 a year ago this month and still eat jacket potatoes with a low-carb filling as @Lucyr suggested, but I have reduced their size considerably.

My nurse told me I needed to eat more carbs as I had lost a lot of weight before being diagnosed T2 and have since put on half a stone I'm pleased to say. But that's me, we are all different, hopefully, you will see your DB nurse soon and she will be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.

Hello Barrowman, thank you for your reply. I never lost weight - in fact it kept going up and up! My eating had got out of control. So this diagnosis is a blessing in disguise really. The kick in the bum I needed. What I will find difficult is portion control. Having to halve what my plate would normally hold..
Look out for me, as I'm sure I will have plenty more questions.. 🙂

Although when combined with carbs I think that they should be counted.
I haven't had a jacket potato in 8 years not really missed them I'd just have the filling without the spud.

Use a smaller plate!

Tip: A plate with 70% of the diameter of your regular plate won't look that much smaller but will half the area. (Remember that area is proportional to diameter squared, A = πr².)
Now you can fill your plate again!

Believe me, if you can do it you will feel much better and feel a lot healthier for it, go on, give it a try you
know it makes sense. 🙂
