Hi

Just a bit of advice really.

Had socks on walking around our kitchen. Hubby broke a halogen light on the side a few weeks ago. Floor etc was swept and hoovered a few times since then but this evening my heel found the last bit of glass that had been dodging the Hoover.

I pulled it out and the bit if glass looked whole if you know what I mean. Pulling was followed by a nice big blob of blood which was soaked up by some kitchen towel and then wiped with an antiseptic wipe and plastered up.

It feels very sore but other than keeping an eye on it and bathing it to fend off infection should I look out for anything else??

As far as I know I have no foot complications so far from D

Ouch!

I stood on a cactus once (thanks to the cat tripping me up)

After pulling the spike out, i soaked it & cleaned it out with a cotton bud. Dried it & sprayed savlon on.

It was sore for 3 days before I went to the docs, it was infected even tho it didn't smell or look it.

If I was you, I'd have it checked out due to the diabetes

Hi Megan, looks like you've inadvertently discovered why podiatrists give stern warnings to always wear footwear even at home. I can't top Laura's advice - best get it seen asap. Hope you recover quickly.

take care !

Take care of your foot ! Germolene is always good but keep your eye on it for a few days - Nothing seems to heal so well when you have diabetes and although slippers etc. do protect your feet in the house I really miss walking about with bare feet, do you ? Just scared of getting any infections etc.though (even gnat bites take forever to heal now - whats all that about !)

I still wander about the house in bare feet. I only found out here that I should be wearing something on my feet. Even at my first visit to the podiatrist a couple of weeks ago he didnt say anything about it.

Unless my feet are cold, I walk round bare foot & haven't been told to wear slippers or anything 😱

Better look for my slippers now! :(

Judi if stuff generally takes longer to heal than you used to - then it's generally a sign that your blood glucose is higher than it should be.

Is it?

I work on the principle that if your sensation in your feet is normal, there's no particular need to avoid going barefoot, as you'll feel if there's a problem and can deal with it immediately.

The next consideration is infection. Allowing wound to bleed actually helps lessen the chance of infection, as the blood will wash it out. Personally, I prefer using warm salty water / hot soapy water to clean wounds, or iodine tincture if water is not available (stings, but effective!)

Then, keep observing wound for next few days, either looking through a transparent film dressing eg Tegaderm, or changing dressing daily.

Changed dressing this morning and all looked good. Could hardly see it anymore to be honest.

Hasn't hurt much to walk on either.

Will check it again before bed and change plaster
