It's Been A While (some good news :))

It's been a while since I joined this forum after hearing the news that I am a T2 Diabetic! If anyone remembers I joined last July and my HbA1C was 96 and my cholesterol was high, my Triglycerides were sky high and I was a walking ticking time bomb for a heart attack (I'm only 43) and my GP strongly suspects that the episodes of pain that led to my diagnosis were Acute Pancreatitis and I should have been hospitalised.

Fast forward to April 2025 and I have lost 3.5st (still have atleast the same to lose) and massively overhauled my diet and exercise routine. I haven't given up sweet treats like cakes, biscuits and chocolate but they are rare treats, I still eat what many T2 Diabetics would give up like rice, bread, pasta and potatoes (sweet and regular) and I still eat high sugar fruits like Mangoes, Papaya and Bananas everything in moderation!

Last week I had a Diabetic review it was meant to be in November (all newly diagnosed T2 Diabetic patients get a review 3 months after their diagnosis) but I had so many events in the run up to Christmas and after... anyway it's good news my latest HbA1C was 41 which is within normal range (just) and achieved by taking Metformin alone (I was warned I would likely need more than Metformin and I was determined not to be prescribed more than Metformin) and my Cholesterol and Triglycerides also all came back within normal range without taking statins although I am taking a statin now as a preventative.

I have my yearly Diabetic review in July and if my HbA1C is again within normal range I am to discuss and explore the possibility of reducing my Metformin with the view to achieving remission and depending on my Lipid Panel results will consider coming off statins too! I am over the moon I'd been expecting worse!

That's a brilliant set of results - well done. The current definition of remission is 3 months with an HbA1c below 48 without taking any diabetes medication, so you're definitely on the right track, and if you're still there or lower in July then hopefully your DN will agree to see how you get on without Metformin.

Congratulations on the weight loss and great HbA1c results. Your approach is working really well for you.
Well done and onwards and downwards as we say on here.:D

What an awesome update! From an HbA1c of 96 to 41 is such a huge achievement, and the fact you’ve done that alongside lowering your cholesterol and triglycerides (and without needing additional medications) is something to be really proud of.
It’s also great to hear that you've found something that works for you - enjoying foods in moderation rather than cutting everything out completely to allow long-term success.
Wishing you all the best for your July review - fingers crossed for another great result and some exciting conversations about reducing meds! Thanks for coming back to share this - I’m sure it’ll give a lot of hope and motivation to others on a similar path.
Take care and massive well done again!

@Ciryluk3g well done on an outstanding reduction in your HbA1c and in getting your cholesterol down. I managed to get my HbA1c down from 86 at my last check but for my cholesterol was considered to high at 6.4. I have another check in June and am currently running more and using Benecol to a)continue the HbA1c reduction and b)reduce the cholesterol. I also came off the Metformin in Feb in order to try an get to remission. Your results look like you may be on the way to hitting that target as well.
