Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, and good morning. Popped my 1st post on here yesterday, very new to this forum (any forum).
I'm looking for guidance, information and to hear from anyone with similar experiences.
I have been suffering with a range of ailments of late, and all I hear is "its because your diabetic"..... For example, my ankles and feet are very very swollen, itchy and somewhat painful. I asked the health centre nurse, she said "its because you're diabetic"???? I then got a rash on my feet and ankles, still frustratingly itchy I thought it was an allergic reaction, or maybe midgey bites {or worse }.... So after treating the rash/spots/bites I was told from pharmacist"its because you're diabetic"..... I get why blurred vision & headaches are linked, but am I REALLY suffering with additional"stuff" because I'm diabetic?

I Apologise in advance if I posted the above in wrong section of site.......

Welcome to the forum Bitsuns. I've experienced a similar rash around my ankles so I look forward to reading the answers to your question. Thanks for asking it.

Have you got a cat or dog? If they have fleas the bites tend to be on the feet and ankles because the fleas attack from ground level!

This symptom could very well be diabetes related Bitsuns so best to eliminate that possibility first. A period of sustained high sugar levels can cause itchiness especially around the foot area. It can settle once the BG's drop consistently I understand. A rash does sound suspiciously more skin and therefore dermatological related though. Don't let them fob you off.

Alas I have neither a cat nor a dog. Perhaps I just have fleas :(
Seriously, the rash was like tiny little pinpricks very evenly distributed around my ankles and not at all like bites of any kind. Any further ideas Radders?

Hi, edema, foot calf swelling is common. I had that, it was because of high blood glucose. It resolved when my BG came within range and I haven't had it for 3 years now. I found it important to test my blood glucose with a home test kit.

There are some things you can do. This is what I would have liked to have know early on. This gives a simple overview to how it works for me. The more carbs I eat the more carbs I want. They don’t give up easy and it’s biochemical

Generally spelt oedema, not edema, in UK. Swelling is uncomfortable, however it's caused or spelt.

@Bitsuns all you need do is look surprised whilst saying what would it be if I hadn't got diabetes? Another good one when a medic turns round and says it's your diabetes is to say oh I've never found it's your diabetes in the medical dictionary can you point me to the relevant information please?

This works wonders 🙂

All very good suggestions

No, no pets.... Just an annoying itch and rash......

No, sorry!

I'm with Bilbie on this. It is likeliest due to high blood sugars. Do you test your BG? It might be worthwhile, because if you get your BG down, as Bilbie says, it should go away. I think telling you "it's your diabetes" without giving you any further advice is appalling.
