Just that....it's hit me that I am diabetic and that this is for life.

I'm doing well in terms of weight loss by counting calories and carbs.

I've lost 12lbs in three weeks and when I check my blood glucose levels they are now normal.

I'm on 500mg Metformin twice a day.

I've bought a blood pressure monitor and every reading I've had today has shown a diastolic of around 100 ....I have only got the machine today though.

I already take blood pressure medication,

I'm having blood tests next week for liver function and also cholesterol. Plus I've got to give a urine sample for kidney function.

I think it's all come down on top of me. I've been out for two walks today and yet my steps are only 6000 and everything says it should be 10.000.

I'm anxious and feeling nervy, I'm guessing this is normal for a new diagnosis but I'm carer to my son who is autistic and I need to keep healthy for him.

All the blood pressure stuff is worrying me alongside the diabetes.

Agh...just needed to write it down,

Agh...just needed to write it down,
When I was at work I had a job where I was walking about all day, I may have sat down sometimes to do a particular job but walking to and from work I would chalk up anywhere between 15,000 and 25,000 steps but once I retired it was a struggle to be doing 8,000 steps but I suppose they were brisker and consistent as it was going for a walk.
So it is quite challenging to get the steps in unless you are a dedicated walker, I know lots of people here are but many are not so all you can do is your best .
Losing weight will usually have a positive effect on reducing blood pressure if that is a problem.

Hello @Amanda3266 . I was diagnosed early August and it is a bit daunting at first. I wouldn’t worry too much about the steps as long as you just try and do your best. I generally aim for a 30 or 40 minute walk each day, this for me is generally around 4,000 steps. With the rest of the day I am generally doing a further 3 or 4 thousand. If I do more great but not too bothered if not. A 30 minute walk will usually reduce your blood sugars.

Many people have reported that a few months on low carb and they are having to get their blood pressure medication reduced, so it might not be a problem much longer.
There is usually no need to count calories as a type 2, as they don't seem to matter much, and once you are settled on a low carb diet there's not much need to count carbs as long as you are eating the same menu - which many people tend to do anyway.
I have never been advised to do any amount of steps a day - and I don't - but it doesn't seem to matter, I have normal blood glucose levels and have had them for some years.

Hi, you might be doing better than you think. I saw a research piece recently that said 6000 steps was as good as 10000, no meaningful benefit in the extra 4000.

Mine wasn't for life.
I just got myself back into a healthy BMI, but I didn't have a high BP.

I counted the calories, did the Newcastle 800 calorie diet, many of us have done that with success, and now don't watch either carbs or calories, just keep my weight down.
I do watch saturated fats though, as I found it pushed my cholesterol up.

There is a good post on cholesterol here.

Thank you all so much for your responses, feeling calmer this evening.

Going to rest tomorrow and just catch up on a few things.

Important thing is that I now know I am diabetic and with the weight loss everything should fall into place.

with your BP checks, make sure you are chilled out before doing it. (I am aware doing that with kids about is hard)
Generally sit for 30 mins without caffeine, smoking or food in that time frame.
When taking the reading, sit up properly with feet on the floor and take the reading without being distracted by tv / devices etc.
If it is up, wait 5 mins and check again to confirm it.

Pick a couple of times a day to check it and log the results.

I would take your logs and your machine with you when you get your bloods done (assume a bp check will happen same time) to confirm you get the same readings on your machine as you do at GPs to make sure you are taking it properly so you know your home readings are reliable.

Totally understand the ups and downs of dealing with the diagnosis, I'm only a few weeks ahead of you on that.
The days when I'm a bit mentally and emotionally beat up over it are getting less and less the more in control that I feel.
The in control comes with knowing I am:
1) taking my medication on time
2) testing my bloods every morning to get a general picture of where I am at (not always helpful but better than not knowing and wondering LOL)
3) testing my bloods vs different foods and learning what my own body can and can't handle (and eating according to that)
4) being more active that I have ever been
5) I would like so say loosing weight but oedema is masking what the scales are doing but living in hope that fat is going somewhere in that mess heh

You gotta start somewhere getting it all under control. Allow yourself some time to process and work out what kind of improved lifestyle works for you and keep up with your appointments and it will hopefully all come together and be well managed at least.

It will all come together and becomes normal just keep testing and tweaking until you know what your body needs and soon you will see big changes, I'm a year into T2 and have got my B/P back to normal am off meds and have good control of my blood sugar also my bloods have gone back to normal, my liver was kicking off but is recovering. I don't test my BG's so much now because I know what I can and can't eat but I eat very well.
