Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with Diabetes 2 in 2013 weighing in at 13 stone 10lbs.
The GP said I must take 2 Metformin twice a day.
I hate pills and said I would do it myself. He said I would not be able to.
I told him that if I died in the meantime he could put on my death certificate
'I told you so'.
The weight and the Hba1c came down to under 6.5 and at my last review a week ago
it was 5.8 and my weight is 10st 9lbs. The diabetic nurse is happy with that.
Basically I cut the carbs and started doing some exercises on the Wii.
I would not go anywhere near a gym and I certainly haven't starved.
So to everyone out there I hope you feel encouraged. We do not have to be a slave to pills.

ThatsThat's great news Sophie and but for the fact that I'm starting at 15 stone and the nurse asked me to lose about 3 stone I'll be doing what you've done. I might join a gym. There's a cheap one nearby that could be useful when it's bad weather.
Thanks. Very supportive.

That's wonderful, @sophiesocks - and a great attitude 🙂 !

It takes willpower and determination to achieve, but it can be done as you and others have shown, and it really cheers me to read stories like yours on this lovely forum. And a big raspberry to the medics who are behind the times, negative and unsupportive :D

Great to hear, @sophiesocks.🙂 I've also manged the same & never been on meds. Lost 4 stone & now a normal healthy weight.🙂

I have found that doing a lot more walking , when I would usually take the bus has ticked the "exercise box" for me.

Well done Sophiesocks. Not everyone is the same but it shows that it is possible. 🙂

@sophiesocks
Terrifically well done.
Yes it is totally possible with hard work and focus to achieve the results you have.🙂

The hard part is now not slipping back into the "old" ways which can be so easy to do.
This is a long haul journey.

I managed to lose three stone without trying - just went low carb and was so much more energised by it I walked more and was more active.
It was only when my clothes began to fall off that I thought perhaps I needed to check.

Good luck Graham. Please keep us informed how its going 🙂

I’m the same, refused to take Metformin and managed to get my hba1c down from 73 to 40 in six months along with a two stone weight loss. My DN hasn’t rung me at all about it as she told me I would never manage without the pills! But as Vince said it’s hard not to go backwards so we still need to be vigilant. The way I see it I personally feel so much better for it all I wouldn’t want to go back to the old ways anyway so apart from a few blips I’m sticking to the new regime. Well done you and keep,it up!

Thank you for all the comments.
When I was first diagnosed the dietitian said I must have carbs.
That made no sense to me. Eat the carbs and take pills to control them?
It seems that the medical profession is beginning to see this makes no sense either.
Only the drug companies are gaining from it.
