A state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive treatment, islet cell transplantation can make a positive difference in the lives of adults with Type 1 diabetes who have severe hypoglycaemia unawareness.
The Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this year. Founded by parents of children with Type 1 diabetes, the charity has committed millions of pounds to diabetes research, awareness campaigns, and information and educational support programmes. One of its most significant achievements to date is the provision of a state-of-the-art Human Islet Isolation Facility at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford. The facility supplies islet cells to seven clinical centres across the UK, which are used for a cutting-edge treatment called islet cell transplantation.
Islets are clusters of cells found within the pancreas. They produce the hormone insulin, which helps maintain blood glucose at healthy levels. In Type 1 diabetes, these cells don?t work and patients must take insulin via injections.
