please could anyone tell me if this could be true,
i was talking to a fellow diabetic yesterday and he informs me that green veg is bad for diabetics as they contain some thing bad for us diabetics,i'm
not sure wther to believe this or not any help please, regards micky.

You should avoid certain types of vegetables including beans, parsnips, carrots and peas All these are high in starch..As for all green i hope not i love my cabbage and green beans.

"Avoid" is too strong a word. It all depends on how YOUR body reacts.

I eat all vegetables and starchy carbohydrates and, with proper portion control, generally have pretty good bg readings. Granted, I am currently just diet and exercise controlled, but I was on gliclazide and metformin until just a month ago (I think my weight loss helped my insulin resistance).

Do you have a blood glucose monitor? If not I suggest that you talk it through with your GP the next time you see him/her. If you tell them that you want to test your blood glucose to better inform your diet choices, you may persuade them to put the test strips on prescription. There is plenty of advice on this forum about how to test and when.

Andy

p.s. That person who told you about green veg is just plain wrong, by the way.

I was under the impression starchy foods were GOOD for diabetics, as they're slow release.. and so with the right insulin/meds can prevent hypos.

Starchy vegetables and beans have about as much carbohydrate in one serving as a slice of bread.I was told to have little starchy carbs.

I'd be reluctant to take the word of anyone who advises avoiding foods because "they contain some thing bad" - I'd want to know exactly what. If you can get the name of the compound, I'd be interested to know.

Generally, the only vegetables to be cautious with are starchy ones, mainly root veg such as potato, sweet potato, swede, parsnip, also pumpkin & squash etc. Baked beans also need caution, due to sweetened tomato sauce.

I was told to reduce my intake of things like potatoes, pasta, rice and bread as they're too high in carbs, but that carrots were good as they're high fibre and slow release. Green veg are good they told me and eat as much as you like, same for beans and pulses (not baked beans, too much sugar). I was also told to cut down on things like chicken and prawns as they're too fatty.
