My daughter rang this evening to say her flatmate tested his blood and he was 12.5 - and he is drinking lots and weeing lots! Is it possible for a non-diabetic to have levels this high?
I told her to to get him to test again and then eat a chocolate bar and check his levels after 2 hours. She will let me know later what his level is. Not sure i have given the right advice - but i said if he feels ill to go to A & E. Bev

Gosh Bev, I dont know but I wouldnt have thought so unless he has just eaten something/drunk something sugary....

how come they had a meter? I think that is good advice, if he continues to be unwell got to the A&E and see a doctor. Always safest.

Your daughter knows her stuff 😉

sounds like good advice for the moment, definitely tell her to get him to go to his doctor's to get tested for it...unless lloyds are still doing the diabetic testing (although i imagine they would just send him to his doctor's anyway).

i'm terrible for accusing people of having diabetes, they only need to drink loads in front of me and i put my 'DIABEEEEETUS! face on!

i'd be curious of the outcome of this, let us know!

edit: good point sugarbum, if he's just eaten something then it may send his levels wonky...we tested my partner's bs the other day, came out at 10.7 i think, then we realised about half an hour before he'd eaten something

Doesn't sound good, does it? I don't think a non-diabetic would spike that high, whatever they ate. Any idea what and when he had eaten before testing? The associated symptoms do seem to support the possibility of diabetes, I'm afraid (but obviously, I'm not a doctor!).

Non diabetic blood levels are generally between four and seven mmol/L. He should get himself to A&E pronto. To me that would say diabetes.

I dont know when he had last eaten - i forgot to ask! But he must have suspected diabetes himself as he bought a test meter that was on sale in the chemist this afternoon.
I tested myself once after eating what i can only describe as a 'ton of sugar' which consisted of jelly babies - penny sweets - chocolate cake and thorntons chocolates! (never normally do this) - and i was 5.5 after half an hour of eating them! So it did seem to me that having levels this high and with all the other symptoms etc that things arent looking good for him.:(

Will let you know what happens later - and thanks all for the advice!:DBev

I tested a friend after dinner once and she was 9.something. i'd say anything over 10 sounds a bit high! I think he should make an emergency GP appointment.

My aunt's not diabetic, and was in A&E because she was having an allergic reaction to some antibiotics she was on. She tested at 11.4 , and they told her to go to her doctor and get tested, because it was unusual for a non-diabetic to test so high. Turned out she's not diabetic, and it may have been the allergic reaction that made her blood sugar go up, but the doctor certainly thought it was unusual, so I'd recommend he gets an emergency appointment with his GP :(

Unless feeling very ill, I'd suggest that a GP or out of hours emergency doctor is more appropriate for someone who suspects they are developing diabetes. Assuming Bev's daughter's flatmate is a young adult, even if he is heading towards type 1 diabetes, it is likely to come on more slowly than in a child, so an appointment with GP on Monday is probably soon enough, but if he feels worse before then, then head to A&E. (written on Saturday evening)

Hi Bev,

Could be lots of things Bev.

The first question I would ask is were his fingers washed first before the test?
I say that because I tested one of the chaps at work and they nearly fainted with the high reading... Washed fingers and it was normal.

Find out what his BG is first thing in the morning after waking up and before eating. If still worried I'd get him to phone NHS direct.

The other thing I would do is test for Ketones. Perhaps you could lend some of A's urine sticks (assuming he has them).

I hope it's a false alarm.

Let us know how things progress.

I once was 9.9 after eating two big family bags of choc raisins, I worried for ages but was 4.1 in the morning. So if you do something extreme like that, then it could happen. Needless to say I haven't done that since.

I know it's not funny if this guy is diabetic, but I have to say it made me laugh this morning when I read this! Not one of us above thought to ask if he'd washed his hands first, and it's probably the first thing we'd do ourselves if we got a reading that was higher than expected! :D

sorry came into this a little late but sounded as though you did the right thing bev, how are things now?

Update -
The flatmate ate a chocolate bar and tested after 2 hours - he was 9. He had been 12 before the chocolate bar. So i have advised going to the gp just to have himself checked over. I have no idea if 9 is acceptable for a non-diabetic and of course there could be other reasons so thought this was the best advice. Thanks again all.🙂Bev
