Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, well July this year my Nurse Practitioner informed me that due to my weight, and waist size and age I would be considered as diabetic,😛 the blood tests etc all being border line but type 2 has arrived, the other :D tests all being MMM?? dodgy, so November arrives with time in between giving some over long period for my wife and I to adjust, further tests, and still in there with the diagnosis.... I had read and read and read as many pamphlets, flyers, handouts and down loaded masses on the net about my new friend, is this a friend, family wise its not relative being the only one of 6 kids, to achieve the life time award. 😱. With 3 children of my own I pray this is my award, and not given to them, "god" will that be hard to ever accept.
I find it hard to not get p'd off with the same advice and incorrect assumptions on how i achieved this, on just how I should get to deal with the after affect, :mad not..I am not mad, angry or dismissive, i have NOT ignored or gone into denial, I accept this as a matter of course.. a life style earnt. Oh how much I now adore and cherish my family, and especially my wife..I had the pleasure of serving in the army, going to exotic places with my rifle, to smile, and occassionaly be shot at, that was easy, compared with pricking my finger to test my blood. so far i am diet controlled, and have dropped a lot of weight, so if you are on the Leeds 10k in June, i will probably be the panting prat behind you..

Hiya. First off, good to see another member signing up.

I don't know a great deal about T2 so won't try to give any concrete advice on that. What I will say though is that it can be - or rather - IS a lot to digest and although it's ace that you're taking an interest by reading every leaflet under the sun sometimes it's a bit easier to take it that bit slower. You'll get a lot of feedback from folk a lot more clued up on T2 than I'll ever be on here so that should help a fair bit as well. It's a lot easier to understand what people in the same boat say than any printed gear. Even though this is text based... That I believe is what they call irony!

Sounds to me you're headed in the right direction. I'd be done in even thinking about a 10k jaunt never mind doing it.

As for passing things on there's conflicting opinion. Although, as far as I've been told there's no proven link genetically.

Hope things go good. All the best!

Hi Colin, welcome to the forum.

Personally, I do believe that there is a strong genetic aspect to t2 diabetes. Also, for some people, it then only kicks in when poor lifestyle results in lack of exercise and excess weight.

With any luck, you'll be just like me where losing the weight has improved my condition significantly. In my case I had become insulin resistant (the insulin couldn't do its job getting the glucose in the blood into the cells). The exercise and weight loss has improved my sensitivity so much so that I am now off the meds and feeling pretty 'chipper'.

Anyway, it's good that you're still 'borderline' at the moment. You have time to get sorted before the nastier complications start to manifest themselves.

Andy 🙂

Hi Colin, welcome to the forum 🙂 As Andy says, there is a genetic link, but there are other complex factors involved, it's not simply a case of having that link therefore you will get it. Nor, you may be surprised, is it necessarily true that a poor lifestyle means you will definitely get it - millions don't, and yet many thousands of people who lead perfectly healthy lifestyles do succumb. As I said it is complex, so don't beat yourself up too much.

What is very true is that you can improve your health no end by doing exactly as you appear to be doing - improving your diet and lifestyle. Training for the run is a great idea as it gives you a good goal to aim for and the aerobic exercise will do wonders for your overall stamina and fitness (although you may not feel that way currently! 😉) Regular exercise is the key, as this will enhance your insulin sensitivity considerably as well as helping you to maintain good, steady blood sugar levels (and also good cholesterol levels, which is something not often realised).

Have a look at the 'Useful Link's at the top of this section or by clicking the link below:

Highly recommended is the book by Gretchen Becker. If you have any concerns or questions, or just want to have a good old rant - fire away and we'll do our best to help you out! 🙂

Hi Colin and welcome. The first thing my gp said to me after diagnosis was that it was not my fault. There is a genetic link and I think he said if one parent had diabetes there was a 50% chance the child would too. Being diagnosed diabetic may seem to be awful but actually you will receive a different level of care. Your blood pressure, cholesterol and other levels will be checked and assessed. Sounds like you have gone the change of lifestyle approach and you will/are probably feel much fitter than before the diagnosis.

Don't beat yourself up. Maybe if you had not been overweight the diagnosis would have been delayed - maybe not. One of the books recommended on this site, think it is the one Northy mentions puts forward a case of which comes first - overweight or inclination to diabetes. The fact your body starts resisting the insulin your pancreas creates can mean the weight piling on. When you are diagnosed you could be overweight - but which came first? Weight or insulin resistance?

Ask questions on here, the wealth of experience and willingness to share is remarkable.

Good luck and let us know how you progress.

is it me 2

Many sincere thanks to the repliers, especially for taking the time to read my entry...as part of my process, or as a part of a road chosen for my path to the future, I have over the time from july been taking a "control diet programme", reducing my size of plate, the food on it, it reduced sugars, little salt, plenty veg, little or no red meat, proir to this for four years i had dieted, and exercised via the gym etc, initially lost weight, then found myself gaining for a while, gym instructor put this down to renewing blood into areas not filled before, in Sept this year my wife and I elected to utilise an inheritance for gastric bypass(for her), band (for me), as i am tired of ever getting bigger, and her health needs.
net result, from sept 13th to now just under 4 stone shed, now roughly 18.
Helen has also lost 4 stone and is 100kg now.

The hardest part in this, well adverts on TV, and Accepting this newcomer into my life. Helen my wife had been a nurse, and told to give this line of work up or go into a wheel chair due to slip disc problems, thus became a librarian, and a gradual gain in weight, her back problems increased, thus we both put quality of life over wealth now/ I for my partwork shifts 2 days and 2 nights 12 hourd each, 2 15 minutes breaks, and a lot of walking as i patrol a university campus, mrals were the tv type 4/5 for ?5, for the last two tears and more, i prepare my meals to take in, thus i know what i have in them and no additives, I am a mean ingredients person, with more veg than anything, or salad of course.

And i have moments where i beat myself up mentally for many things, including T2, I have a new prospective on life, not that the previous was bad..

Thanks to all for reading my blog😉

Very brave of you both to go for the surgery Colin, it certainly appears to have worked well for you. Many people have related how much healthier they have become after diagnosis because it forces them to take a really good look at their lives and priorities. Long may it continue for you both! 🙂
