The drugs, some of which are now in trials as an obesity treatment, have also been linked to potentially deadly pancreatic diseases.

Now, two of the world?s leading drug regulators, the European Medicines Agency and the Food And Drug Administration, have launched investigations into the safety of the drugs that could lead to their removal from the market.

Professor Stephen Bloom, a diabetes specialist at Imperial College London, who is planning to launch his own study into the safety of drugs, based on a compound known as GLP-1, said: ?The studies linking these drugs with cancerous abnormalities and abnormal pancreatic changes are extremely worrying.

?If I were a patient I would choose not to go for this class of drugs, but use one of the older drugs which have a longer safety record.?
