I had my review yesterday and the news was not good, my HBA1C had gone up from 75 last test to 110 this time, I know I Iost the plot over the Christmas period, but I got back on track so I was not expecting that sort of a result. Anyway she is trialing me on Invokana has any one been on this? Due to take my first tablet today, just wondering if anyone has any experience of it and likely side effects, nurse did tell me that it can cause thrush. If this does not work I will be on insulin with I want to try and avoid.

Also known as Canagliflozin, in case people don't recognise the brand name. One of the 'gliflozin' series that make you excrete glucose via the kidneys, hence the risk for thrush, I don't have any knowledge, but I think some people on here may be on similar meds, @Stitch147 maybe?

I think it's from the same stable of medicines the dapagliflozin I have been prescribed comes from. It utilises the kidneys to rid the blood of glucose. I would read every piece of information you can before you swallow the first pill. The side effects can be quite serious and I would ask you to carefully consider the side effects. Forearmed is forewarned. I have yet to take my first dapaglifloxin and I filled the prescription a week ago. My consultant stated it may reduce my dependence on insulin but I'm not fully convinced. I am happy to be on insulin as I know the risks but dapagliflozin is a different ball game. I have to gamble that the reduced level of insulin I inject will not be of a level to bring about ketoacidosis. I at least want to know that my GP is on hand to support me if I experience any of the numerous side effects.
This is the problem, the medics dish out these 'new. drugs and you are not given a full explanation of what the drug will do. I have no doubt that some patients take this type of drug with few problems, Trouble is they cannot give any guarantees but I guess that is the case with many of our drugs. This is just my opinion but just be aware of the possible side effects and refer yourself straight back to your GP if you encounter problems whilst taking them..

Thank you, yes I am worried about side effects as I take quite a lot of medication. I will research more before I take them, I haven't got them yet.

Yep, I take empagliflozin (Im on a combined metformin and empagliflozin tablet twice a day), I make sure I drink plenty of water throughout the day since being on it to help reduce the risk of any kidney infections (not had any yet and been on it a while now). I have found that I do pee a lot more whilst taking it, but that's probably due to the amount that I drink aswell.

I would call the pharmacist who will fill the prescription, if you can. Our pharmacist loves answering questions.

I have been on empagliflozin for a number of months. The warnings came to nothing for me but it did reduce my hba1c reading from high 80's down to around 60.

So sorry to hear this Lorraine but do you know what ~ you will bounce back if you really are determined ~ with or without the medication. I know you have been struggling for a while now but maybe this is the time to start thinking positively for the sake of your own welfare. I think many of us succumbed to those extra carbs over Christmas and we're still paying the penalty for it ~ well, some of us!
I totally agree with the comments made by @Davein and @SadhbhFiadh. Mull them over ~ and talk to your Pharmacist. My Pharmacist knows more about side effects of medication than my GP ~ hoping yours does too. Take care hun x

Thank you all for your comments, I am going to discuss this med with DN nurse on Monday, and ask my SIL when she comes back from her holiday today as she works in a pharmacy so she will check with a pharmacist for me.

Yes the more opinions you get on this, the better. The information leaflet contained in my packs of Forxiga (dapagliflozin) is several pages long. in fact the longest I've ever read for medications. It starts by stating that it is subject to additional monitoring as does yours for the Invokana. So keep an extra look out for the many side effects.
I've looked at some review sites online and it's a mixed reaction. A lot of people report having to go many more times to the toilet daily and having dehydration and thrush. But I guess it's like many medications- there's always a risk of having side effects. you just have to weigh up the pros and cons for you personally, If you decide to take them please keep us informed. Dave

Hello ladyengineer,
How are you getting on with the emapglifloxin now? i have had one month's worth of dpaglifloxin with a couple more months prescribed and am thrilled that all the measures are coming down - especially my weight. Did your HbA1c get down lower than 60?
I suffered a nasty genital infection straightaway on starting this new med but always have acyclovir handy to deal with it. Do you get dizzy at all?
Would be great to hear from you on your progress.

Best wishes, Val

Started on Invokana about a year ago as Metformin stopped working for me. Soon after I started to develop thrush (side effect of Invokana) and my diabetes nurse got Canesten HC prescribed for me. It cleared it up after a few days but comes back frequently and I think it's getting harder to get rid of each time. Whatever about Canesten, I'm not too happy with all the hydrocortisone that comes with it. Should I worry about that? Also if I hydrate a lot more would this lessen the chance of thrush flare ups?

Lorraine - If you have concerns about any interactions, you could feed all your meds into the following checker:

You may find this, or something similar, is what your Doc or pharmacist uses. That said, if you have a decent pharmacist, I'd get them engaged too.

Sometimes it's just nice to read these things for ourselves.

This thread has been resurrected from 2018 @AndBreathe - but thanks for the medicine checker, that looks very handy!

Welcome to the forum John!

Sorry to hear about the thrush :(

i done have any experience of Invokana, but steroids are well known to mess with your BG, so it would be worth keeping an extra close eye on things. Do you have a meter you use yourself?
