Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
HI everyone,
I just joined this site recently. It looks so very interesting and helpful. I have been a type 2 diabetic since 1994, for a long time on oral meds but since 18 months ago also on Novarapid and lantus, the oral meds are 4 metformin at night.
My diabetes levels have been on the high side, especially the night ones. The last four months blood test which I done in April 2010 was 7.4, the diabetes specialist prefers it to be under 7. I consider diabetes my uphill battle. The previous three blood tests before April 2010 were all over 8-9. Considering that since February 2010 I have been recovering from a broken leg due to a fall and unable to walk on it, so was unable to do any exercise at all, I think having 7.4 is not that bad. The specialist does agree but still likes it lower. I think the reason it is lower than the previous 3 blood tests which were all over 8, as since I had the accident, I stopped having any bread at all. I thought being not mobile and unable to take off the calories with exercise, it is better to stop having toasts for breakfast and tuna or ham sandwiches for lunch. The bread is replaced with cereal and salads. On Monday I am starting physiotherapy at the hospital, after 3 months in cast and a moon boot. I was not allowed to walk on the leg at all, due to the nasty break of the ankle\leg bone. I will be given exercises to do at home for the leg, at the moment it is very stiff but I am sure phsyiotherapy will help. Hopefully eventually I can start normal exercises to help me get down the levels. Sometimes I am having high levels during the day. I test 3 times daily. Sorry if the introduction is long. Have a nice weekend.

Hi Calypso and welcome to the forum. You seem to have been having a rough time of it lately but I'm glad to hear you are soon to start physio which should help get you back on track.

Yes, I know "they" go on at you to get your levels below 7 but I think you've done very well to get the levels you have at present if you've been unable to exercise, so take a pat on the back for that at least, and then try and get your levels below 7 !

This place is full of very nice people who can answer most of any diabetes-related questions (although we can't give medical advise, of course). The real joy is that the people who post on here are living with diabetes and trying to control it and not just telling you from a text-book what you ought to do and I have found that very helpful when things are getting a bit out of hand.

As they always say on here, no question is too silly to ask (and you might get some very silly answers too if this lot have been in the virtual pub too long !).

All the best and we look forward to hearing more of you.🙂

Hi Calypso, glad to see you made it here 🙂 Welcome to the forum!

Very sorry to hear about the broken leg. I have broken my leg in the past and know how difficult and frustrating it can be, as well as painful. Well done on reducing your HbA1c! Do you adjust the amount of novorapid you take according to what you are eating? If so, then you should be able to get further reductions in your levels and satisfy your doctor 🙂 Good luck with the physiotherapy, and hopefully you will be able to get back to being more active before long.

Please ask anything that you are not sure of and we will do our best to help. Even though you have long experience of diabetes, there is always a lot to learn from the experiences of others! 🙂

Welcome to the forum Calypso 🙂

Hi and Welcome I'm fairly new myself. It has been really helpful to read what others have to say about different topics so sure you will find the experience a good one.

thanks for your warm welcome

I want to thank all the kind members who took the time to welcome me. I want to mention them to let them know how much I appreciate their warm welcome. Thanks to Vince13, Northerner, Lyndasw, Emma131, PhilT. Shirl, am64, Old Holborn, and Johnellis.
Thanks to all of you for your warm welcome and the suggestions and encouragement you gave me for my diabetes situation and for my first visit to the physiotherapist tomorrow which hopefully will get me back on my feet and this will help me get my levels better as at the moment I cannot do the normal exercises to keep the levels down as I used to before my fall. Thanks again and have a nice day to everyone.

I sent earlier a thank you post for the warm welcome and mentioned Vince13; Northerner; Lyndiasw; Emma131; PhilT; Shirl; am64; Old Holborn and Johnellis but I just cannot see the post on my screen so I am thanking you all again. Thanks for the welcome and the encouragement regarding diabetes and my leg. I had a physiotherpist's assessment on Monday. I am off the wheelchair, but for now have to depend on the walking frame to walk and no stairs yet. Have to keep the leg elevated due to swelling and to use heat for the swelling. Have the actual physiotherpy session on the 10th of June. The physio is supposed to take 2-3 months I am told. Regarding the levels I am still getting 9-10 after dinner.Have a nice weekend to all and again thanks for your warm welcome.
