Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi my name is Marion and I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last week. It’s all very new and I would appreciate any advice you feel is useful as I’m still figuring it all out at the moment. Thanks

Hi Marion and welcome.

Sorry to hear you have cause to join our illustrious community but you have come to the right place for support and advice from people who know from experience where you are at and can relate to the emotions and frustrations of trying to manage the condition.
I imagine you are feeling pretty overwhelmed at the moment. There is so much to take in and a whole new lifestyle/routine to get used to. Thankfully it gets a lot easier with practice. I am just over a year down the line and this forum has been an invaluable resource in keeping me sane and learning how to manage my diabetes.

Which insulins have you been started on and how are you managing?
Is there anything particular that you are struggling with at the moment? What are your BG (blood glucose) levels like?

I imagine they will have started you on a lowish dose and will slowly increase it to bring your levels down slowly. Hope you have a good nurse to look after you and provide guidance and support .....particularly in these difficult times.

Hi I’m not on insulin at the moment. I am taking Metformin 500 mg bd. My BG are between 5.6 and 9 at the moment. I’m taking them 4 times a day. Apparently I’m not a typical type 1 but my bloods confirm I’m definitely type1. I also have vitamin d deficiency and low B12. My team are keeping a close eye on me at the moment as they think I am in the honeymoon period.

Hi @Marion2 and welcome to the forum, I am pleased that you have found us, but sorry that you have needed to. If you have been diagnosed at a later stage in your life, the onset is often slower. If so you are fortunate that you have been picked up early.

I am pleased to read that your specialist team are keeping a close watch, as eventually it is likely that you will need some insulin. At present with your levels in target on the tablets it sounds like you still have sufficient beta cells (in the Pancreas) making enough insulin for the amount of carbohydrates that you are eating.

However you are managing your condition it is useful to start to get used to counting carbs. In whatever form you eat them they will be converted to glucose once inside you. The information about the carbs comes in such different formats so it takes a bit of working out sometimes.

There is a lot to take in at the start, but there is plenty of support and advice available on here. Feel free to ask any questions that you have and we will try to help.

Welcome to the forum Marion.

Interesting.

Not too bad for a newly diagnosed person. Do you know what your HbA1c is?

Welcome to the forum @Marion2

Are you being seen at a hospital clinic by a consultant? It certainly sounds like an unusual case, and I suspect you need specialist support.

Interesting that you’ve been started on Metformin when you already have B12 deficiency - as Metformin is known to cause B12 problems in some people.

It is very unusual for someone with T1 not to be given at least some insulin to support their flagging pancreas.

What advice have you been given about food? Are you reducing your carb intake to help your system cope?
