Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello

Just come across this site and thought it would be useful to link up with other sufferers!

I became diabetic as a result as a very serious attack of acute pancreatitis (like Arthur Smith) almost 4 years ago, which put me in hospital for a few weeks, including a couple of weeks in intensive care. The outcome was damage to my pancreas which means my production of enzymes, including insulin, is compromised. As well as my treatment for diabetes I have to take pills containing digestive enzymes.

I was on pills (metformin and glycazide) at first, and they kept my blood sugar under control for a while, but last year they started rising so I went to see the diabetes specialist. After 6 months of juggling the pills, last month I was put on to insulin and I'm now trying to get used to injecting myself twice a day.

The cause of my diabetes doesn't seem to fit into the normal definitions for type 1 and 2, although the medics seem to classify me as Type 2.

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Although there is often a clear distinction on the diabetes type that's not always the case and, as in your case, the origins can be different. Type 1 is an autoimmune attack on the beta cells of the pancreas, but it would appear that in your case there are other causes for your lack of insulin production. The main thing is to get the appropriate treatment for your own particular needs.

We do have other members here who have become diabetic due to damage to the pancreas and also have to take medications to help them digest food. Are there any particular problems you are finding? Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will try our best to help! 🙂

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forum!🙂

Hi Mike. Welcome. 🙂

Surry to hear about your diagnosis. As northerner suggests, there seem to be so many subsets of the old style types that they're starting to become obsolete. The medical world has discovered that we're not all the same ! 🙄:D

Hope you can learn from us and teach us about your perspective.

Rob

Welcome to the site Mike.

Its very difficult to find others in exactly the same situation - there is always a slight difference. I probably have some similarities where shared experiences may apply.

Due to Pancreatitis I had 5 years taking Creon and Domperidone with every meal, however during this time I had no diabetes.

A year ago I had the Pancreas removed so as well as requiring the Creon and Domperidone I'm now classified as Type 1 diabetic (although not for DAPHNE???) and inject insulin 4 times a day.

Even after a year its a struggle to keep the Blood Sugars under control and to then understand why the readings aren't what you expect.

Hopefully one day it will all fall into place🙂
