I would be interested in members opinions on these readings. I was pre-diabetic, got out of it and am now back in it again.

I decided to start some testing again to see if I could find out what foods were causing trouble and so I started testing at 1 hour and 2 hours. At the moment it is mostly breakfast I test as I tend to stick to fish, meat, poultry and salad or veg for lunch and evenings.

A couple of days ago I had some oat bran porridge with natural yoghurt, seeds and nuts. I started with a fasting blood of 4.8 (mine are not usually that low more in the 5.2/3/4/5. After one hour I was up to 7.3 and then after 2 hours down to 5.2

I tried chia berry porridge today which is one of Michael Moseley's recipes. I used organic porridge oats this time with about 75g of blackberries including one strawberry, and natural yoghurt with nuts. I started at 4.5, after one hour it was 6.9 and then after two hours 5.1.

I know the levels are normal after two hours but they seem a bit high to me after one hour and I am wondering if porridge may not be the best thing for me for breakfast and I should change back to egg based ones again. I can tolerate natural yoghurt and it does not move too much.

Thanks for your help. I know these readings are not terrible as I am not diabetic - just trying to avoid it for as long as possible.
 
Those figure seem fine to me. They come down very nicely.
 
Thanks ljc. I had thought that maybe the 1 hour readings were causing my problems because they were going up too much. Still a lot to learn for me I think. I know this is all trivia compared to other members on here but like to ask advice as the Forum members are so knowledgeable and helpful.

I would like to get back out of pre-diabetes like I did before but will have to see. Have nowhere to go with weight as already underweight. Maybe try more exercise. GP not sure why it happened but thinks maybe my pancreas is becoming more insulin resistant as I get older (64, 65 next month). He will re-test in a year. I would like it more often but CCGs say one year pre-diabetes and 3 months diabetes which I suppose is understandable as they have to prioritise people with diabetes. Hence the testing. Even though GP said best not to do it; I think he is concerned more that is cannot fund the machine and strips really but I don't mind funding it myself if it helps.

Maz I think those numbers are excellent...too often we concentrate on just how high we go...that spike....it's about how we come down from those 'spikes' we have...so your highest rise would normally be after one hour (that can vary for others)...then the 'come down' after two...I think that demonstrates you have exceptionally good control...well done.
 
Maz, nothing about Diabetes is trivial ok. It would do all our hearts good to hear that you have managed to beat pre diabetes back to base again.
@Bubbsie is right it’s about how swiftly we come down and your one hour tests are fine too .
Your GP may be right , it could also be that your pancreas can’t give you as much insulin as it used to.

As you’re underweight imo you need to try to increase calorie intake which I know is difficult when low curbing. Could you increase good fats ?
 
1 hour spikes can be quite high even in non diabetics (I know as I have tested on my wife). It's the recovery after 2 hours that's the most important thing, & you're figures are perfect.🙂
 
Thank you Bubbsie and Mark. That is very reassuring. Ljc I am going to try increasing the good fats as I have to do something to try to put some weight or at least not lose any more. It is interesting that I am still 28 waist even though I am 10 pounds under my minimum BMI. I think that is quite a big waist for someone underweight although my GP does not think I have a big waist. There is probably some insulin resistance. I know there is a test and I did ask about it but GP does not think it is necessary. I know they won't pay as it is expensive and I would have to pay myself. I am sure I read it in Michael Moseley's book that he had one but, due to the expense, the NHS won't pay for them.

It is interesting that you test your wife Mark. I have told my hubby to get a machine and do some tests. He is a very positive person and says he is perfectly OK. I have told him that you can think you are OK but may not be and it is always best to keep an eye on things if the equipment is there to help.

I am so glad I found this Forum. I am a terrible worrier and I think I would have been very stressed out by now. Thank you all for your help.
 
Thank you Benny. I am trying to discover through testing what has sent me back to pre-diabetes having got out of it once. GP thinks may be becoming more insulin resistant with age (I am nearly 65). I am going to battle on.
