Early intensification of insulin regimens is associated with improved clinical outcomes in children with recently diagnosed type 1 diabetes, according to a government-funded study.

The Diabetes Control and Complication Trial has already established the benefits of intensive versus conventional insulin therapy in adolescents and adults with type 1 diabetes. But it remains unclear whether intensive insulin regimens yield superior hemoglobin A1c results in pediatric diabetes care.

Dr. Catherine Pihoker from the University of Washington in Seattle and colleagues in the SEARCH for Diabetes In Youth Study Group examined whether insulin regimen intensification over time was linked to metabolic outcomes in 1,606 youth with type 1 diabetes who had a baseline visit and at least one follow-up.
