Intensive glucose control in type 1 diabetes doesn't help prevent changes to the structure and function of the heart that can lead to heart failure, long-term follow-up in the DCCT/EDIC study showed.
No cardiac MRI differences emerged at year 15 of follow-up after an initial 6.5 years of intensive therapy to reduce mean hemoglobin A1c levels down to around 7% versus 9% with conventional therapy, Saul Genuth, MD, of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and colleagues found.
The groups had similar end diastolic or systolic volume, stroke volume, cardiac output, left ventricular mass, ejection fraction, remodeling, and aortic distensibility, the researchers reported online in Diabetes.
