Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
has anybody else had problems with insurance? i had a quote for my 50cc moped online which was ?78 rang them up to confirm everything and pay when they asked about medical history of course i had to tellthem ..... thats when the **** hit the fan. end of the questions the bloke turns around and said the cheapest quote he had was ?350 just because of the diabetes. i had this with every company i rang afterwords even ringing a company the diabetic charitys said to ring and they still bumped the prices up because of the condition.

forgive me if i amwrong but isnt this disability discrimination????😡

All depends what type of licence you have - maximum with diabetes treated with insulin is three years, so if DVLA only permits you a 1 or 2 year licence, then insurance companies will give that evidence some weighting.

The other considerations are whether you have a full or provisional licence and your age? A young person (eg under 25 yrs) with a provisional licence is considered a higher risk than an older / more experience driver / rider with a full licence.

Personally, I've never had any trouble getting cheap car insurance, but have never tried getting moped insurance, so can't help with suggestions.

What was your last HbA1c mazzda ?

And do you attend a clinic/GP regularly ?

They're usually the things they'll go on when assessing. I've not had any real probs either. I tend to stick to the big boys like Direct Line, Tesco, etc.

I've had, over the years, a few cars and a moped.

My 16yo non diabetic, completely novice (not even done his CBT yet) prospective rider grandson is insured TP only for approx ?250. Went up to nearer ?450 for TP, F & T and ?550 for Comp. Both the latter with ?400 xs and the brand new moped was only ?740 on the road.

The cheapest daughter could find was with CIS so that's who it's with. This was last week, by the way.

i have a 3 yr temp licence neved had problems with diabetes they have never asked about hba1c or anything like that they just ask what type you are and if your insulin based which i am. thats when the premiums go up

I was always asked about Hb and control. It may be that the ones who ask can give a lower quote for better control.

Might be worth an email or phone call to DUK to see what their stance is. They do have partner insurance companies but I don't think they're cheap to start with.

Well I find this very odd, I've never, ever been loaded for motor insurance, since before I passed my test in 1986 - and our 3.5 ton motorhome was actually cheaper to insure by adding me to it! Nor am I loaded for husband's sports car or any of the saloons he or I have had in the past. He's still got 3 points on for a speeding ticket AND we had an attempted break-in to the motorhome - approx ?1,500 claim - 15 months previous.

Just thought - have you tried 'the bike insurer' ? - would need to ring in view of medical condition.

Must be something wrong somewhere as I have never been charged extra for having diabetes.
Not even when I was a biker. Licence held since the late 1970's

Try going into a local broker instead of just ringing up or doing it on line.
Have you past your test or is it a provisional licence?

i have a full uk license (3 year temp) help dor 6 years and i have a full uk moped license. go on to a insurance search website and do 2 quotes putting exact same details in exept 12 with no diabetes and 1 with full. bet they are different

I have van,1200cc bike & car been big D since 3yr old. Passed test 3 weeks from being 17 & would go wild if anybody give me a hard time with Ins ! 😱

Reading this thread has made me wonder......my car insurance is due on 24th Jan when I rang to check premiums I find they have doubled 😱 I was advised to inform my insurance company about the D and also told DVLA (have a letter from DVLA sating they are aware of the condition) and am now starting to wonder if the admission of D is anything to do with the raised premiums. Insurance company by the way say its the area I live in......funny I lived here when I took out the original policy!

My car insurance was due at the end of December - the premium was pretty much the same as last year.

I'd declared my diabetes to them in march.

Possibly that might be impacted by the fact I set my wife as primary driver (it's a debatable fact, I drive more miles in total but she spends more time driving).

But, it's also quite possible that since last time you got a quote, there's been a spate of motoring insurance claims in your area, for thefts or accidents. Also, if your job changes, or you change between employment and unemployment, premiums can change. Premiums are rising - I've heard an average increase of 20% from one year to the next mentioned, which means some increases will be very small or nil, while others could be 100%. But well controlled diabetes shouldn't make a difference. Worth asking them why - find a lower quote elsewhere and threaten to leave original company, and they may suddenly review their premium. Good luck. 🙂

insurance is a joke no matter what you say. i found my ins premiums went down by more than ?500 if i put my wife on the ins, yet she was put down as a provisinal driver (hasnt even got that) i did a quote on go compare for a car i saw on ebay other day and it was the same with D as without however only 10 companys quoted with D and 70 without D.

I did that Copepod and when I told them I could get insurance for ?600 per year they asked who with and it turned out to be the same people to which they replied they couldn't match it lol Insurance cancelled and a new policy will be taken out online!

Not good the way some companies treat new customers so much better than existing customers - but best to play them at their own game, as you did.
