Got my new Contour Next USB meter today and bearing in mind that I haven't had much time to play with it so far, these are my first impressions.

Ease of use: Both were easy to set up and start using right away. The Next isn't especially flexible when it comes to setting parameters though. The Insulinx let me set my high and low limits to the DSN's instructions, in my case between 5 and 9 but the Next won't go over 3.9 or under 10. Win for the Insulinx.

Readings: Need a larger drop of blood for the Next but the strips suck it up really quickly. Less Blood for the Insulinx and two dots to aim at on either side of the strip instead of one at the end. Next reading was one point higher than the Insulinx so well within tolerance. Draw

Software: Both are plug and play devices and the software is clear and easy to use. The Insulinx requires a cable to connect to your PC while the Next USB obviously doesn't. Possibly one point for the Next just because you need less gear and it's rechargeable via the USB port too. Deffo win for the Next.

Accessories: Freestyle finger pricker is much better to use than the Next one, less painful. Next lancet is smaller though. Insulinx, win.

Strip pot for the Next is significantly bigger and I struggled to close the carrying pouch (someone mentioned this already I think?). For design Abbott's win as there's room in their pouch for some jelly babies, spare lancets, a few wet wipes, a phone stylus and the tiny screwdriver for my specs. Insulinx win.

Appearance, functionality: The Insulinx touch screen screen is large and well set up, but hard to read sometimes in poor light though there is a back light. The Next has a clear colour screen and three buttons next to it, basically up, down and OK. A separate power button is located at the side. Draw?

At the moment Insulinx is winning because the only real drawback I've found with it is the difficulty in reading the screen in poor light. I'm going to give the Next a fair go though. At the moment, I reckon it'll be a good spare rather than my main meter.

I've been using the Next for about 3 months now and have got used to it. Only awkward thing I have found is that the strips are half the size of the Accu Chek ones I was using so fiddly to get out of the oversized pot - a better delivery system would be a good idea, something flatter where you could take a strip off the top, if you can picture it? Gave up on the Next pouch and am using an old Nano one 🙂 The features of the Next far outweigh the Accu Chek Aviva I was using.

I have both meters and use the next in preference. The insulix is more customisable for adding notes over the next, uses less blood than the next, though not that keen on the side pick up points.

The next software (full free version) is more customisable, can add multiple meters into one profile. The colour screen is clearer on the next. In the PC software you can set the personal setting limits to what ever levels you want.

I prefer the bigger pot to get the strips out, big fingers. the next pouch could be a bit better.

The insulinx does have a back light which you can switch on but the display could be clearer.

But isn't the main thing about the Insulinx that it has a bolus calculator? I didn't think the next USB had that?

Ah OK... Seems odd to go for that one then. Would a freedom lite not be smaller to cart around?

The Insulinx is a bit of a brick, plus the cable if you need to plug into, say, your consultant's PC. Weight wise they're about the same with the Next USB being a stick format.

That's right Alan, I'm currently on fixed doses at fixed (sort of) times.

I have the freestyle lite as well, for me its to small. My main meters are the next and the Accu chek mobile, both these suit my needs.

Readings checked out last night and this morning.

Bedtime: Insulinx - 6.4, Next 6.9
Waking: Insulinx - 6.4, Next 6.9 (I thought I was seeing things so I did my waking BG twice and got exactly the same readings. I'm never the same level in the morning as I was at bedtime, so I got confused).

Draw.

I know what you mean - I once had a day when all my pre-meal and my bedtime readings came out as 5.6 🙂
