hi can anyone tell me if it is ok to take insulin straight after a meal because sometimes i make a meal sit down to eat it and maybe feel sick or cannot finish the meal and i have gone low sometimes because of too much insulin which started off right with the amount of carbs but with not finishing the meal is too much if this makes any sense.:( thank you

Only your meter will tell you. Timing of insulin injection can be a crucial part of the equation. Test 1hr and 2hrs after you finish eating to see how the different timing affects you. It's a bit unusual for insulin to start working quite so fast. Many people need to leave 15 mins or so for the insulin to het going. Have you tested your basal level at that time of day recently?

Another approach might be to inject a conservative amount 'up front' and then the balance to cover whatever you ate after you finish?

Good luck with it

thank you for your reply will try testing like you said. hope everyone doing ok.🙂

I have been injecting after my meal for about a couple of years now. My DSN told me to do that in case I didn't finish my meal or like you feel sick.

I second the suggestion to take some insulin before starting eating, then the balance afterwards.

Hi karen.🙂

The first thing that occurred to me was why do you feel sick at mealtimes sometimes.

Have you had this investigated ?

There's been times when I didn't feel like finishing a meal so I would agree with the others about some upfront and then the rest afterwards if this is a regular occurrence, but if you are struggling to finish meals for any reason, I would advise speaking to your GP or DSN about this.

Hi Karen. I agree with Rob you should find out why you are having problems with sometimes not being able to eat and feeling sick. There is a condition called diabetic gastroparesis which can cause this problem. This condition causes delayed stomach emptying which also means that the carbohydrate that you are consuming can sometimes have a very slow effect on your BGs which can also cause hypos. I strongly suggest that you contact your diabetic consultant, not your DSN, about the problems you are having asking if you can be checked for gastroparesis. I suffered from it for years and it wasn't until I started being unable to eat something as small as a sandwich without being sick that I got the help that I needed. Neither my DSN nor my GP were able to help and it was only my consultant who referred me for the painless test that I needed
