Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello,
I am an 81 year old man with Type 2 diabetes. A year ago I contracted the C-diff virus and was hospitalised because my renal system was in danger of collapsing. Insulin (I was at a level of 16) and Metformin were withdrawn 'pending review'. I lost 50lbs in weight. The review has never happened. For several months after being discharged from hospital my blood glucose levels remained at a level of between 6 and 8, occasionally dropping to 4-ish. But now, having regained about ten lbs the level is constantly at around 10. I have neuropathy in both feet and my legs which is very painful during the night. My question is: should a review of my condition be initiated by me or do I wait to be contacted? I have heard nothing since my hospitalization. I should add that I have had steroid injections (one in each knee) during the past year, and after each injection my blood glucose level shot up to 20+ and is very difficult to get back down. Any advice or observation will be much appreciated.
Thanks.

You shouldn't have to ask for a review, but unfortunately some people do slip through the cracks and some GPs don't seem to know much about diabetes. It's also possible that there may have been a communication failure between the hospital and your GP. If you are concerned about your condition then you are entitled to ask for help, please do make an appointment without delay. Make a list of all the things you want to ask about and make sure you get satisfactory answers to them all. Good luck 🙂

As Sally71 said, it should be the hospital that contacts you, but these things aren’t 100% You’ve got nothing to lose by contacting them.

Yep, what Sally71 and Bronco Billy said. I understand from your post that the metformin and insulin were stopped. Are you still off them? If so, then you really must get back to your GP or even the hospital (A&E) if your levels are over 20mmol/L. The steriods will definitely be pushing your glucose levels up as well.

I hope they get things sorted for you ASAP.

Andy 🙂
