Hi, I was diagnosed with Type 2 nearly 3 years ago but I have recently started on insulin. I am just starting titration of my insulin on my own, every 4 days after checking my last 4 days readings. My target before meals are between 5 & 8. For example, my last 4 readings before my lunch were 7.4, 7.8, 6.6 and 9.5. If I average these readings, my average is 7.8 which means my reading is on target but my latest reading is over target. Can anyone tell me if should be averaging and if not what should I be doing? Any help would be appreciated? Thanks

What insulins are you using Susan? - titration of it depends on this - you need to do something quite different for mixed insulins than you do for other types, in order to obtain the same effect!

Hi Jenny

Thanks for your reply. I’m taking Humalog, before breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’m taking Lantus at bedtime.

Right! So you need to first start with the Basal insulin, the Lantus and do some basal tests because unless you can get the background insulin right (or as right as you can) then you are wasting your time trying to get the bolus (Humalog) pinned down.

Have a read of this, then do it, tell us the results and we'll make suggestions how you can tweak it - if there are any. It instantly highlights the parts of the day where your body is struggling for starters before you even eat and cause more problems - and where it isn't.

Hi Jenny

I have been increasing my Lantus for the past few weeks as advised by my diabetic nurse and my morning readings are now all within target. I am now trying to get my Humalog units correct but have been increasing it as advised by my diabetic nurse. They have now asked me to increase it myself as per the instructions given but some of my readings are within target and some aren’t so I’m really not sure if I should be increasing. I am able to contact them Monday to Friday but they are not available during the weekend which is why I posted the question. I will have a look at the information in the link and let you know how I get on. Thanks for the advice meantime.
