Hi my name is sue I'm 68, two years ago I was put on humulin I recently changed to trasiba. I have been experiencing sore mouth, throat tongue started 2 years ago and had cameras down but nothing conclusive. GPS don't know, I was wondering if it could it be the insulin

These are not symptoms I have heard about.
Have you read the patient leaflet that is in the box with the insulin?
The possible side effects are listed on that leaflet.

Welcome @sparklysue55 🙂 I haven’t heard of those side effects either. You could try contacting IDDT and see if others have reported them. Common side effects are aching muscles and joints, brain fog, stomach issues but there are others.

One idea - have you tried switching to SLS free toothpaste? It’s made a huge difference to my sore mouth. I also avoid mouthwashes. That and making sure I’m getting enough B vitamins has helped enormously. I presume dental issues have been ruled out?

IDDT. Could you please expand on the acronym meaning? Also SLS? To the uninitiated. May help. Thanks.

Edit for typo,

SLS = Sodium laureth sulphate
IDDT = comes up on Google at the top: InDependent Diabetes Trust. They know a lot about intolerances to various insulins, particularly the newer ones.

Hard to say, do know some people had bad reactions when changing from animal insulin to human insulin way back in the day, so much so they had to change back.

Suppose any drug not naturally produced by your own body will have side effects in some folk.

Sorry to hear that you are experiencing these problems. Can I just clarify that the problem has occured whilst using both Humulin I and now with Tresiba. If so, it is less likely to be a reaction to the insulin as it would be rare to have the same side effect with 2 different insulins.

What are your BG levels like? Just wondering if levels are not well managed if oral thrush been ruled out? Clearly your levels were high for you to be started on insulin 2 years ago and thrush is very common with high BG levels and can be quite persistent if not treated, so that might be one avenue to explore/discuss with your GP if it hasn't been ruled out already.
Definitely worth trying a change of toothpaste too as per @Inka's suggestion.

Welcome to the forum @sparklysue55

Sorry to hear about the problems you have been having with your mouth and throat :(

I’ve also not heard of these sorts of issues being related to insulin. Hope you can get some more checks and investigations to try to get to the bottom of things

Perhaps you could consider calling the Diabetes UK helpline on Monday (9-6 weekdays) on 0345 123 2399. The advisers may be able to check with the DUK database / knowledge bank to see if it is a known thing?
