Does the Insulin pump Only good for Human Insulin. is it available to an Animal Type insulin, as Human Insulin is unsafe and has serious Side Affects!

Isn't most insulin 'brewed' these days, ie make by genetically modified yeast

@Martyn P are you saying that you get serious side effects from Human insulin?
I have had Type 1 for nearly 20 years and have never taken anything else.
Apart from hypos when I take too much, I have never experienced any serious side effects and have no complications from my diabetes. In fact, I have no other health issues apart from (well managed) Type 1 diabetes.

I am on Porcine insulin as I do not recognise that I am going hypo on Humanoid. What other side effects do you get as the three times I tried it I had no other side effects? I was told you couldn't pump Porcine (Bovine is no longer produced) 4/5 years ago but that was by a fairly incompetent DSN who was transfixed on Type II and low BMI!

Welcome to the forum @Martyn P

How long have you been living with diabetes? Do you have particular worries about human or analogue insulins?

@Pumper_Sue used bovine insulin in an insulin pump for many years, but switched to Fiasp when bovine insulin production ceased a few years back.

Hello @MartynP:
I used bovine insulin in a pump for many years as allergic to porcine insulin.
It's an old wives tale about not using animal insulin in a pump, pumps were invented before so called human insulin and I can assure you washing up liquid was not used instead of animal insulin.
There are members of this forum using porcine insulin in their pumps as well, sorry I can't remember who though.

If you want all the info (professional) then contact John Hughes at Advanced Therapeutics he was probably the leading expert in using animal insulin in pumps 🙂 https://advancedtherapeutics.org.uk/

I have had Type 1 Diabetes for 53 years and was one of the first to be put on Human Insulin and this causes Nocturnal Seizures diagnosed by a Epilepsy Specialist, that it was the Human Insulin.
It reduced when I was taken off the Human Insulin, although now have to take medication to control the seizures caused by Human Insulin.
I also have a friend who got bad side effects and his Dad is a Pharmacist and changed him to Animal Insulin and problems reduced, all caused by Human Insulin.
It not affect everyone but can be bad to some people.
I control my Diabetes fine. The Specialist only look back at 2 weeks results, so cannot help as you need to look back at least 2 months.
When I was diagnosed back in 70's the Specialist had Type 1 Diabetes, and always looked at my results back at least 2 months. Other Specialist also looked back more than 2 weeks results and said need to look back that length of time.
Also these Sensor things not always good as when Sugar level reading Low always best to do Blood Test as Sensor not always safe. I have eaten something when Low and checked after 30 mins and Sensor still Low, but Blood test over 5. Makers said that cannot trust the Libre 2 Sensors when Low and Blood Test should be done.
After 53 Years I know what am saying, just saying lots of people cause affects.
Glad you ok with Human Insulin.

No Insulin is made from a pigs pancreas, although are some new one but the Human Insulin does not use natures things ie: Pigs Insulin.

There is another Type Insulin now but is not the Human Named. I have had Type 1 53 years and was diagnosed start of 70's and Controlled by a Specialist who had Type 1 Diabetes. He new more about Diabetes than those today. He said you need to look back more than 2 weeks to control Diabetes. You cannot see with just 2 weeks results as the Specialist do. I have problems in passed and the Specialist looked at results more than couple weeks and asked how long to control. My on Doctor had back in Jersey also would look at results further back than 2 weeks to see how long things wrong and read notes. Specialist don't do this and have told them and they changed.
My main question about Insulin Pump as will ask Specialist if any good for me. Was told last time asked while ago was told only Human Insulin.
Insulin Pumps were made and in use in Canada 10 years before UK as was sent details from friend in Canada thats how know this. Thanks

Well Human Insulin did not work for me and caused the Nocturnal Seizures, but when back to the Animal Insulin was better balanced and the seizures was better but no serious problem triggered by the Human Insulin. So what ever it made from and when ever have it seizures get worse and have been told by a Epilepsy Specialist that if have again could cause me to get Permanent Epilepsy. So have to avoid even if means death as have in notes NEVER TO HAVE HUMAN INSULIN EVEN IF IT MEANS I DIE!

I’m not knocking animal variants of exogenous insulin. (Or your input.) Used them myself. Certainly there is a difference in the hypo symptoms. I can wake from human. But the effect from a porcine low rings the bells louder. I’ve always been a person to wake slow. But I was alerted quicker as a child on the animal.

No sensors then. Just peeing in a cup.

I thought it was brewed in e-coli or something?

Edit: NR is recombinant DNA from bakers’ yeast. Who knew! Some other human and analogues are rDNA from e. coli. o_O

Sorry to hear what a terrible time you had on human insulins.

When was diagnosed in the early 1990s, human insulin was just coming in I think, and there were plenty of accounts in the BDA magazine (forerunner of Balance) where some people who had used animal insulins completely lost their hypo awareness and got into all sorts of bother, so I guess you are not alone in having had a very negative experience :(

It must be very difficult for you that the impact has continued even after switching back away from human insulins :(

Hope you can find a way to make insulin pumping work for you. Do consider following up that contact that @Pumper_Sue suggested who may be able to help.
