Relationship to Diabetes
my husband, 77 has been type 2 for around 12 years. He has been controlled by medication until recent high readings prompted our Doctor to start him on 10 units of Lantus SoloStar 100 once daily. After the second dose he developed a rash around forehead, nose and chin. Thereafter getting severely loose bowels. He stopped insulin after three days at docs advice until bowels settled. After approx 10 days if suffering sever trots or constipation he.finally felt well enough to try insulin again! He administered 10 units last night at 8.30 and by 3.00am was back on the toilet with severe trots, burning anus and bleeding. Doc advised cease insulin.again.until he.can.see.him on Monday. Any help/comments re adverse effects would be.much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Good grief! Never heard of anything so severe happening to anyone at all after any type of insulin. Consequently no advice really.

Hi Jean. Welcome. That doesn't sound nice at all. I've just read the (pil) patient info leaflet for Lantus online. It does mention the possibility of a rash, nothing about the runs, though this doesn't mean it can't happen.
Their are quite a few different insulins available, so it's likely one of the others will suit your husband better.

I've no experience personally, but I'd have thought it was possible to be allergic to one of the other ingredients,(like preservatives etc) so another brand of insulin might have different things in it that your husband can tolerate.

hopefully the doc will have some ideas on Monday. At the moment that feels a lifetime away though! Thank you for your reply

I was thinking the same myself.

I guess it does seem ages away for you.
I'm guessing like Robin has already said , that it could be an allergy to one of the other ingredients in the Lantus that is affecting your husband.

Oh Jean, what a nightmare.

I no a friend of a friend who tried to move off the pork insulin stuff and the replacement stuff made her very ill, but that's the only time I have heard of this sort of thing.

I am on luntus, no issues.

When I first started on the novorapid, I got awful wind, but no more than that.

Hi. Occasionally people are allergic to one or other insulins; rare but it happens. I would ask to be swapped to Levemir and try that?
