Adding insulin to the cocktail of drugs a patient gets after a heart attack may improve the outcome by reducing inflammation.
We now know that inflammation of the coronary arteries plays an important role in heart disease. Two proteins, known as C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid alpha (SAA), have been used to measure the extent of this inflammation. Researchers at the University of Buffalo have discovered that insulin can help damp down this inflammation after a heart attack.
