My GP tells me I may have to go on to Insulin and has given me 4 weeks to get my levels below 9. Haven't been able to control my levels since it spiked in January to 26 average is 13 now. I see my GP on the 22 March and I've never been keen on injcetions and frankly it's freaking me out. Need some reassurance and encouragement please.

Hi marcon, good to hear from you again, but sorry to hear that you are finding it difficult to control your levels. What medication are you currently on? Do not worry about the insulin, or the injections. Insulin will give you much better control and improved levels will make you feel so much better generally. The injections themselves are pretty much a painless affair these days. The needles are absolutely tiny, and available in a variety of different lengths down to 4mm. In fact, a fingerprick test tends to hurt a lot more than an insulin injection. 🙂

Can you think of any reason why your levels have taken a turn for the worse? Have you put on weight recently, or made any changes to your diet and activity routine? What sort of things are you eating, and do you test regularly to see what effect different foods have on your levels?

If you do need to go on insulin don't see it as any kind of failure on your part, sometimes it's simply that the output from the pancreas has decreased and needs some support.

Try not to worry about the injections, they are quick and easy to do, you barely feel a thing. My Auntie is Type 2 and has always been needle phobic and could not even watch me do an injection but recently it came to the point where she herself has had to go on to insulin. It's only been a few weeks and she is managing her injections herself now with no trouble.

Hi Maron
As a needle-phobic who used to do injections, it's possible and not too bad. If you don't like the sight of the needles, try and get a penmate device from the hospital. I had one and it was much easier than a standard cartridge pen.
If you need any hints, tips - just shout! 🙂

You will soon be wondering what all the fuss was about
I was dreading the insulin routine
Started with 8mm needles, then along came 4mm ones, excellent
Your Dnurse should guide you through a few dummy runs at the surgery or wherever and give guidance as to the various site to use
It`s not a case of heres your kit , get on with it
And the good news is, you are in charge of the needle

I'm the same as suziepoo.
I hate needles but I find my injections don't bother me at all.

Don't stress about going on insulin, it's going to help you in the long run & that must out weigh how you feel about it all

Hi Marcon - I went onto injections end of September last year. Had an unhurried session with nurse who went over all major elements, First injection took about a minute for me to do - then wondered why I had worried as it did not hurt at all. One suggestion - make sure you start on a Monday so that someone will be around to answer any questions in the first couple of days and if poss get an out of hours number for nurse. I got started on a Friday leading me to phone NHS direct a couple of times over the weekend as I had not been told my levels would plummet down immediately. I went from mid 20s/low30s(meter gave upon me!!) to under 10 after one injection of insulin mix. The following week my dose was reduced by half. No bad symptoms but wish someone had told me that would happen.
You'll soon be getting the hang of it all but also write down any little questions you think of as it will help nurse and also show you are taking it seriously and want to be in charge.
Let us know how you get on.
