Insulin dosing made easier - FDA approves Smart Pen caps

If you’ve been T1 for nearly three decades all this stuff is preprogrammed in your brain, which comes prepacked in your skull, and is difficult to lose. You can get pencaps that tell you the time of last dose, they’ve been around for a few years. And if you can’t eye up a meal to estimate carbs, you haven’t been paying attention

Making all these things worked out by devices means that some folk will rely on those and be lost when all these devices need recharging.

Furthermore, T1 is a game where the goalposts move around on a whim, so fixed doses for certain meals are a joke. I gave myself my usual dose for a pasta meal this evening, and I’m currently chewing jelly babies. Sometimes you just can’t win.

Sorry not interested. For all the reasons @mikeyB mentioned
I’ve only been on MDI around 5 yrs and I am now pretty good at eyeing up a meal etc .

@mikeyB i hope your need for a jelly baby feast is over and you are ok now

They seem to be for disposable pens? Total waste of resources those pens are. Far better to get a reusable one. It’s just people trying to make money IMO.

I wasn’t in any way recommending it, just thought it might be of interest to some. Diabetes doesn’t always just afflict intelligent people like yourselves.

Agreed with above posts the only thing I would add is that these could be beneficial for younger people who may be learning how to dose or for those who may need extra assistance like with minor learning disabilities.

I can see how it might be useful for some, particularly people who rely on a bolus calculator. Personally it would not suit me and would just complicate things, especially as I have to factor in protein for my bolus insulin and inject that after the meal. Easier to make judgements based on what I have in my head and that takes into consideration multiple factors including how active I have been etc.
I agree that it is easy to become too reliant on technology and is one of the reasons why I take occasional breaks from using Libre, so I don't forget how to listen to my body and remind myself that whilst the tech is convenient I don't NEED it. The first night without Libre is always scary for some stupid reason and I do resent it a bit for making me feel vulnerable without it. Really appreciate it though when my break is over and I put a new one on! Funny how the mind works!

Whilst I agree that diabetes management is a moving target and, those of us who have been aiming at that target for a few years, have some idea when the wind is likely to push you off target, I think this a great idea for some people who understand they are designed to work when the shot is being made in a vacuum with no wind to adjust the aim.
(I think I may have over done this analogy now).

I have always avoided disposable pens but maybe getting the technology for disposable is a route to get it for reusable ones.

I like to see new technology and manufacturers trying to make things easier so I avoid making negative comments just because it doesn't suit me.

Thank you for sharing @Pattidevans
