Relationship to Diabetes

I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent & capable, with an HNC in Applied Biology
Most of my working life has been in the product development department of a major food company, latterly as a project manager
After redundancy I retrained, and worked, as a chef, obtaining NVQ3
I like to think that I know a bit more than average about diet & nutrition

I live on my own, so have the run of a fully equipped kitchen.
I am retired, so I can spend as much time as I wish to shop & cook, and have a reasonable income from three pensions

Within walking distance or a short, (free with pass), bus ride, or short drive there are
Tesco, Asda, Lidl, Sainsbury's supermarkets;
an Iceland, a Farm Foods, several bargain stores;a Holland & Barrett
3 or 4 Asian shops with a range of various foods, including fresh fruit & veg at low prices.
The market has a couple of; fruit & veg stalls; butchers stalls; cheese & cold meats stalls, a fishmongers, and an independent health food stall

Yet again and again I find my standards deteriorating such that end up living off junk food - bacon sandwiches, bread & cheese, and too much cheap red wine

Can someone give me a bit of a pep talk please? Thanks

Hi Zuludog. An honest post and who am I to preach to anyone? I was a carb monster yesterday :( We all go off the rails sometimes but the important thing is you're recognising it and understand the dangers. The people who are in denial or ignorance are at the most danger.

It's one thing knowing something and another applying it at all times. Sometimes emotion trumps intellect!
Can't be easy cooking healthily for one either because there's not the same motivation. So what can I say apart from 'Stop It'....you know the consequences. Nothing tastes as good that it's worth risking your limbs for!

Good luck and I'll try to be good too. I hate Easter eggs....repeat....I hate Easter eggs! 😳

Hi, Maybe the best pep talk is to re-read your post. You don't need us to tell you, you know. I started my improvements in February, I had been stupid for a long time before that, I have no excuses I know about Diabetes, I cant blame Dr's or anyone else. but what I realised is I need to do it for me, then I can be there to see my grandson grow up. I started giving myself small targets, BG levels, carbs per meal limits etc, and with some great advice from here, keeping a full food diary, (I use my fitness pal) and I keep a log of my bg on a spread sheet, My latest HbA1c was 62, down from a previous high of 118. Do it, you know you can.
Keep us informed of your progress. Al

Hi zuludog. Here's a wee (not so wee) comment. I work, live alone, can cook, shop etc.i think the most hard bit of your post was the "I live alone "bit

it's easier to go for the junk as you can do single portions without having to either freeze, waste or eat the same for days n days. You also are your own voice of reason, with no one else there to bounce things off.

I love al's comments and am trying to sort out myfitnesspal, following a wee emotional rant a few weeks ago and the advice I got from members of the forum. My BG levels are going down with a bit more meds and a lot more thought and food prep.

You are not alone here, so good luck with your changes. Maybe you could post your meal choices and use that as incentive to cook, along with helping others with ideas. Good luck

Great idea caroig, you could be our online chef, a new main meal each week of less than 25 carbs that's you challenge zuludog

Hope you meant Zuludog to be the online chef Alan. I can't even work out carbs in a pot of cabbage soup
I think it's a great idea zuludog-give you something to take your mind off the other stuff. Good luck

I have some advice Zulu and it really is VERY serious.

For God's sake wean yourself off that cheap wine, before it's too late to save you - and start investing in some DECENT stuff.

You KNOW you're worth it!!!

Mmmm a nice Barolo...... im off to sainsburys

Hate red wine, gives me a clanging head. Rather a nice pink. If you are gonna drink it, make it the best you can afford, or the best what's on offer

To a degree i envy you, i am married but i sometimes think handling my diet would be so much simpler if i were on my own and i don't mean that to sound sexist or offensive or rude i love my mrs but she is clueless when it comes to portion size etc, and she is the boss in our house if she is not cooking then the kitchen is closed. i find when i am in alone off work and my wife is at work i pick at stuff like comfort nibbling at stuff i should not really nibble at maybe that is what your doing ie boredom eating junk food. Got any pets, dog? might be an idea to consider a puppy to keep you busy. Most of us have off days or binge days i am allowing myself 1 binge day a week.
good luck and i hope thinks work out for you

I think it's hard to find the motivation to cook for one sometimes. When you're cooking for another person too there's a pn implicit pressure to please them but when it's just you that's not there. How about having a cooking day. I make lots of food in advance and freeze it all up in portions so I basically use them as ready meals. I keep myself motivated by trying new recipes to add to my collection. If you like a bottle of red then try researching some new choices and work out what food they go well with then go for it and cook up a storm :D I find that diabetes has basically sucked the fun out of food a lot of the time so I have to keep myself interested or I find myself eating too little. I like Alan's virtual chef idea sounds great 🙂
