BETWEEN 2006 and 2011 Darlington was at the centre of a national research project known as the Randomised Injecting Opioid Treatment Trial, or Riott for short.

This meant that the town was one of only three centres in the UK - along with Brighton and London - where a hard core of difficult to manage heroin addicts were allowed to inject medical grade heroin, known as diamorphine, under supervision.

Results published in the Lancet showed that prescribing heroin in this way can reduce the use of street drugs, crime and give addicts the stability to recover from heroin dependence.
