Today i bought some sainsburys own brand Omega 3 capsules (1000mg). The ingredients are fish oil, capsule shell (beef gelatin, Glycerol), Triglycerides, sunflower lecithin. My question is, are the triglycerides the 'bad' fat in our blood that we need to have lowered? if so, why is it down as an ingredient ?

My understanding is that triglycerides are just a normal type of fat in food. What we need to try and avoid is our bodies creating triglycerides in our blood, which can be a consequence of too many calories from carbs (rather than fat, as you might expect!). I shouldn't imagine the small amounts in capsules would be a problem, but it might be worth asking a pharmacist. As with cholesterol, only a small proportion is from the food we eat - most of it is generated by the body.

I agree with Northerner that the amount in each capsule will be minute and probably nothing to worry about, I take Seven Seas liquid cod liver oil and triglycerides are not listed in the ingredients.

I noticed that too but as I was told by dietician to take them I presume it's ok. My cholesterol had dropped whilst taking them so hopefully that's a sign all is well.

My brother saw the dietician this week and was told that all diabetics either need 2 portions of oily fish per week or to take daily omega 3 capsules. Apparently Cod Liver Oil aren't good enough, it has to be omega 3. This is something I need to do as I hate oily fish! Haven't had a look in the shops yet, always wary about supplements as I took Vitamin C capsules once - the 1 a day kind and got ill and the 1 per day was apparently an overdose for me!

beef gelatin is from the insides of cow bone marrow and glycerol is a byproduct of the slaughterhouse. So these are animal fats and saturated.

I get my Omega 3 from veg, marg (polyunsaturated) , spring greens and nuts as well as other good fats.

Sorry, but all diabetics dont need to have Omega 3 in their diet all people do (diabetics are people too :D)

But as Veganlass says - there are non animal (fish) ways to get it - we get ours the same way as veganlass, and some eggs have it added too, (i know thats no good for vegans😉)
