What will DVLA do when I tell them I have T2 currently treated with insulin?

DVLA will ask the GP and / or consultant that you name on your form for comments. If you haven't had an annual review within 12 months, the DVLA will tell you to have a medical. In any case, the doctor writing the report will want to know your blood glucose records over at least a few weeks. If all is OK, you will be issued with a car licence for 3, 2 or 1 years, after which time you will have to go through the same process. If you want to drive a larger vehicle / more seats, there are more stringent requirments. It is an offence not to inform DVLA when you start on insulin.

There's more information, including links to DVLA web pages, in the Driving / DVLA section of this message board, so I'll move this thread there.

Do I surrender my current driving licence when I send off the DIAB1 and so have no licence until I am issued a new one?

And what is the timescale for processing?

You will have to send your licence back yes as will be issued with a new on. But you can still carry on driving. Unless you have an HGV licence then it's a no I would suspect.
It will take about 6 weeks may be a little longer over xmas and the new year.
Make sure you tell your ins company that you are on insulin though as well. It wont make any dif to your premium, but if you don't tell you are not covered by ins.

Just reread your post and had a quick look at your intro.
If I understand it correctly insulin is just a temp measure am I right in thinking this?
If this is correct the rules are slightly different so do read the info carefully and perhaps email or ring DVLA to clarify things. Because I'm sure I read somewhere temp insulin as long as no more than 3 mths you do not have to inform DVLA.

Please do check this info with the right people though (DVLA)

I would tell the DVLA and let them decide if they need to know. If they don't they will write back and tell you that your license is not affected.

Ring the Medical Branch at DVLA - keep pressing the option that is 'for everything else' or 'to speak to an operator' - eventually you speak to a person.

Once they actually have your application, if there is a delay and you are worried about not having a licence in your sticky paw, they can send you a letter saying you are OK to drive meanwhile.

Mind you I usually hear back within a fortnight or so anyway.

Be very careful how you answer the questions on the medical form. Get someone to check it with you. If you answer the question about hypos by putting Yes then you will lose your license for 12 months. However, you must answer the questions honestly.

I have just told them that I am on insulin and they have sent me yet another form about my cardiac problems. They seem to take a long time responding to the forms.
