Bit confused. People are telling me I have to inform both the above. Have phoned and told the car insurers who asked if I had informed DVLA. Told them that is next on the list.

Have been on the website and on leaflet D100 under Health it says you must inform DVLA if you have diabetes controlled by insulin. Nothing about tabs.

Their phone lines are a nightmare but now I am wondering, do I really need to inform them? Not because I want to hide anything but they are not exactly easy to actually talk to.

It's always safer to inform your insurance people of medical changes. As I understand it however DVLA only need to know if you are insulin controlled. They will eventually give you a reduced license with restricted renewal (usually 3yrs), but it will depend on your Hypo awareness.

I'll move this to the right section, where there's more information. Basically, as Vicsetter said, no need to inform DVLA if diet or tablet controlled, only if insulin is used.

You do not have tp inform DVLA whilst on tabs. Only insulin dependent. They will then issue you new liscence for three years

Isn't it possible to have hypos if you are taking a sulphonylurea like gliclizide? I would have thought that the reason for having to inform them is if you are at risk of hypo so they can assess your hypo awareness etc.

But I'm not a driver, so I know nothing!

NO IT IS NOT a required illness that requires notification to the DVLA the only time you notify is if the QUESTION is on your application form Diabetes is not on the form therefore you are not required to do so

I know someone who works in the medical department of the DVLA who advised that if you are insulin dependent you need to inform them. Some of the confusion probably comes from the forms changing all the time at the DVLA and there are still some old ones floating around in some Post Offices where they ask if you are diabetic and then you tick a box to confirm if you are on tablets or insulin. Not sure where you stand with insurers - I haven't informed them yet 😱

Thanks all. I clearly remember the practice nurse saying I needed to inform DVLA but I think she is just covering bases.

My insurers were fine - no increase which was a relief. But they asked immediately whether or not I had informed DVLA.

I have checked it out, their own forms downloaded from their site say only if you are treated with insulin so that is that.

Perhaps. 🙂

i was diagnosed type 2 in March, at the diabetic nurses i was given a leaflet produced by a testing meter company and the institute of advanced motorists, no NHS/medical connection, its states that I should inform the DVLA, i work for them and doubted the info, so i rang my boss and this info is incorrect, you only need to inform them if you are insulin dependant, and in no other case unless your condition affects your driving, i have added a link below and also check the dvla.gov.uk

hope this helps
