Hi All, I am looking for information on how to donate unused Diabetes medication/sensors as my treatment has evolved but I have some sensors and insulin that I no longer use. I don't want to bin them as it is such a waste. I was going to put them on ebay but I don't want to sell them I want to donate them. Is there any organisation that will ensure that these are not wasted? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is an organisation that normally collects such things, but it has suspended its operation for Covid reasons, if the stuff you have is long dated, it might be worth hanging on til they restart.

I think @Kaylz mentioned a Facebook group for another similar post recently so perhaps she can link it here. Not sure the insulin can be passed on through that means but sensors possibly could.

Yes there is a UK Pay It Forward group on Facebook if you are a member of Facebook, I'll PM you the link as I'm not sure it's allowed to be posted publicly but @everydayupsanddowns or @Docb may be able to tell me if it is allowed for future posts xx

While I’ve known about these sharing groups for a while I was slightly surprised last year to learn that sharing / passing on of prescription items between members of the public isn’t just ‘a bit frowned upon’ but is actually illegal. As such (crazy as it seems) I don’t think you can share the link on the forum as it would be against forum guidelines. :(

I would imagine that as a charity, IDDT mush have some sort of dispensation?

@everydayupsanddowns I know it's illegal to pass on prescribed medication such as insulin, strong painkillers etc but I'm not sure the same rules apply to equipment such as Libre sensors, test strips etc as these can also be sold over the counter as non prescribed items, illegal activity isn't allowed on Facebook and anything breaking the rules wouldn't be allowed therefore groups would be closed down yet there's the pay it forward group and also help I forgot my kit group and the only thing not allowed is the passing on of insulin xx

Interesting @Kaylz - i had remembered it as being ‘prescription items’ rather than ‘prescription medication’ - but as you say FB must be keeping an eye on this too.

I've had a fair scroll through google and looked at a few articles and they all state in bold "prescription drugs" as being the illegal part, as sensors, test strips, cannulas etc aren't drugs I think they are legal to be passed on to those that could use them, of course I respect your decision on not allowing me to post the link to the group publicly on the forum but if it's ok with you I will still pass it on through PM to people that want it xx

Of course! And thanks for clarifying. Has helped me understand better.

Thanks for the group info and the PM's. I don't want the sensors to go to waste when someone can use them and the NHS/tax payers/me/you have paid for them - I have six unopened libre sensors that can be used by someone who can get a genuine health benefit from them - It would be easier to just bin them. Its a crazy world we live in. 🙂
