Hi I'm having issues with my diabetic specialist nurse in that she sees me as a condition not a person and I'm struggling with that. I need someone to work with me to help me find a positive working strategy in order to feel well and healthy.

My previous nurse was so very helpful, she gave me a glucose meter and encouraged me to take random readings and keep a food diary. Then on my review appointments together we looked at the readings and diary and I was able to see and understand what and what not to eat. I felt in control and managed to keep to diet only.

I am willing to move surgeries in order to find better support but there's not much information regarding Diabetic Specialist nursing in GP's surgeries.

Does anyone have an suggestions as to how I can get support please

thanks

Hi jaycee, welcome to the forum 🙂 It's such a shame that your great, supportive nurse has been replaced by an inferior version :( Most surgeries don't have an actual DSN, but instead have a practice nurse who has received 'extra training' - in some cases, this may be as little as a day, whereas a fully-qualified DSN will have spent years in training and deal only with diabetes patients. So finding one like your previous one might prove difficult. Do you know anyone else your area with diabetes, who might recommend a surgery? If you don't then it might be worth looking to see if there is a Diabetes UK support group where you live - attending a meeting should bring you into contact with others who may be able to make a local recommendation.

If all fails, don't despair! You have been given a good grounding in how to approach your diabetes by the excellent nurse, and there is no reason why you can't continue as she has taught you. You are more than welcome to ask any questions you may have here - there are loads of friendly, experienced people who will be more than happy to help out, so you are not alone in this.

Well done for keeping it diet only & good luck getting a nurse who understands. Welcome

Maybe have a word with your gp and see what they think - you may even be able to use the hospital based diabetic clinic, i was asked if i wished to use it but my gp surgery is i feel more useful to me.

Hello

Do your local hospital have a drop in diabetic clinic?? it is awful when you get a nurse who doesn't treat you as a person and is more about the condition. I am lucky to have excellent GP plus diabetic nurses numbers also seen regular my consultant .. wishing you good luck ,,the people here on this group are fantastic I have found.. xxx
