I am type 2 and have been on insulin Humlin i for 3 years. Taking 42 units per day, over this time period I have developed painful fingers and knees. There is no swelling of the joints just pain on movement and lost of strength in my hands. Has anyone else suffered this type of feeling. Thanks in advance for any advice comment.

Sorry to hear about your painful joints @Franklin :(

Are those effects mentioned in the Patient Information Leaflet in the box of Humulin I? And if so, how common are they said to be?

Those are not side effects I have experienced myself.

Do you take any other medications?

There no information with the insulin on this. I do take other non diabetic medications again these side effects are not shown with those medications. My diabetic nurse seems to push the subject away. However the issues are not improving and seemed to have started short after starting on insulin.

Do you thunk your nurse would be open to a conversation about switching to an alternative intermediate-acting insulin, perhaps from a different manufacturer (eg Novo Nordisk’s Insulatard), to see if you might be having a reaction to one of the ingredients in Humulin I?

I have tried with my local doctors diabetic nurse. I did have a specialist diabetic nurse she has now left the nhs and I am waiting to see a new nurse I shall ask again. In the mean time I will e mail them and ask yet again. I was hopping someone on this site may have had similar problems

Sounds like arthritis of some sort, I've just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis after my knuckles and a couple of toes swelled up, there now down but they are achey and not as strong as they were. Knees can also be affected along with hips, it might not be a bad idea to as a doc to check.

@Franklin - you and I are the same age - so I can assure you I'm not saying this to be nasty but are you 100% certain this isn't just your body showing signs of its age and it would have told you this anyway, diabetes and Humulin I notwithstanding?

I thought of that but I have no other issues no swelling or hotness around the joints just painful to move.
