Hi, sorry to hear you're poorly. My little girl currently has a mild cold but running high, the advice we have been given for sick days is a 20% increase in her basal rate if readings are consistently high and checking BG every 2 hrs correcting any highs, and at least once through the night. You need to keep on top of the pain and imflammation with your usual paracetamol/antibiotics etc.
Hopefully someone will be along shortly to give you some adult advice.

Hi Carole, can you contact your DSN about the best course of action? It does sound as though an increase in insulin is on the cards until the infection is dealt with. Are you checking for ketones as well?

Hi
I have appointment at the docs in an hour, its a different doc to mine who says i dont need to check for ketones ,the usual story they like to give, think i will try my luck and ask for some ketone strips for my meter and see what she says,if i dont get much joy with her i will ring DSN in the morning.
thankyou for your help.

Do you have an Optium Xceed? I think that and the new Glucomen are the only ones who can take blood ketone strips. At the very least you should get some urine ketone strips. As far as I know, because you are on fast and slow insulin you have as much need to test for ketones as me, as ketones become dangerous when theire is insufficient insulin to help process them. For a Type 2 not on insulin, or slow insulin only, there is usually less of a problem as the person's own pancreas is still producing insulin - but you are no longer in that situation so insist on being able to test 🙂

Hope the appt goes well 🙂

Good news, i am now loaded down with anti b's and she gave me ketostixs.

Did you get any advice from your DSN about doses? From the sounds of things it would be good for you to get some guidance for 'sick day rules' as the DAFNE lot like to call them.
