Unfortunately I think all of us just have to make our best guesses in those curcumstances. Portion sizes and ingredients vary so much from one restaurant to the other.

Have you come across 'carbs and cals' available as a book and smartphone app. It contains lots of photos of plated foods that can help you guestimate the amount of carbs in front of you.
 
I know that rice is usually 70g CHO for 300g......

The carbs and cals book would be ideal for this.....

Also the website/smart phone app 'MyFitnessPal' has a very good database. It has been a life saver for me now I am on a pump. I can now get carb values to 1 decimal point for pretty much any food and portion size....
 
we use the my fitness pal site too or will get an idea from say the shop bought pakoras if H going to eat out with mates so that we know in advance -he tends to order the same thing generally at places- always has done
