Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I had my lumpectomy and an auxiliary node clearance on Monday (breast cancer). Long procedure. I am back at home now which is good and I don't have pain, just discomfort. Of course I cannot do a lot of exercise and my BG is not good, 11.3 this morning. I feel a bit sad as I have worked so hard to get my BG into acceptable levels. I am hoping that I will be able to fix it. Don't really know what the future holds for me and what treatment I will need for the cancer. Once I am up and about again and the drain is removed I will hope that I can get things better again on the diabetes front. I have had a few good years since 2012 when it was diagnosed so I have to be grateful for that. Sorry I live alone now and just felt like a moan to someone and I know the people on this forum are always there for me. Thank you.

Good to see you are making progress even though the direction is unclear. Feel free to moan as much as you like, its part of what we are here for!

Don't worry about moaning. We're all here to help each other and it's hard to feel positive when you don't feel well. Concentrate on recovering from your op and take it from there. When you feel well enough try to get outside and to plan meals that are tasty but also help those bg levels. Take care.

Don’t beat yourself up on the diabetic front. Having just had an intrusive procedure your body is under stress and will be producing cortisol, a natural hormone which is a steroid and steroids raise BGs. So there’s not a lot you can do about it right now and it’s not your fault. As the others have said, be good to yourself, concentrate on getting well and don’t worry about the D until you are better. {{{{{HUGS}}}}

You are very brave, moan as much as you like. ((()))

Thank you for your replies and understanding. I know I can always depend on this forum for support. My moan made me feel much better. Need to deal with getting better, followed by the treatment and also have another go at the diabetes BG levels. I have not had double figures for a very long time and it scared me. Guess I have some other things to be concerned with at present. Hope you are all having a good day. 🙂

That’s the spirit @happydog. Sending ((((hugs)))) too.

Glad it helped to get things off your chest @happydog

So sorry to hear about your cancer :( Hope the treatment is fully successful. Hopefully the recovery won’t mess too much with your diabetes as trearment progresses, but i would imagine some disruption is inevitable - especially after surgery.

Keep us posted with how things are going

Had a phone call from my GP Surgery this morning to tell me that the HbA1c test that I had done whilst in hospital had a BG reading of 51. My previous HbA1c just over a year ago was 43. The lady who phoned said that she will have to report it to my GP and that it needs to improve. Yes of course it does, but just having had my breast cancer surgery and not being able to exercise as much as I would wish I don't think that I can do a lot right now. I did ask her if she thought that the stress of having just been operated on for cancer might have made a difference. She said no. I will address the issue but maybe not right now. I do hope that they will not want me to take a load of medication etc. I will think about it after I get the cancer surgery results next week. In the mean time I will just take each day as it comes. 🙂. Am I sticking my head in the sand?

I think as you have just had Breast Cancer surgery, needs to be taken into account.

Oh for goodness sake! Surgery, ie, trauma to the body, Stress and worry, less opportunity to exercise. Of course your BG is going to have gone up. Was this person qualified in any way? (certainly no qualifications in interpersonal skills!)

With an HbA1c of 51 you're just over the threshold for a diagnosis (48) and I think you've got enough on your plate right now. By all means think what action you might take as it's likely that diet can have a bigger and more immediate effect but that's for when you feel able. All the best.

Thank you for your replies and also to the other people who have responded to my first post. I don't think she knew a lot. I said that stress raises cortisol in the body and she replied. I do not know about that you need to focus on your diabetes. I really will in a bit. I am surprised that they have bothered to phone me because usually the do not take much notice of what I am doing. My last review was over a year ago and in the car park. I gave some blood and that was it. BG has been quite good today. 6.5 was the lowest. Thanks again everyone. It is nice to have contact with sensible people 🙂

I am so sorry to hear that you were put under pressure unnecessarily like that. I know you are Type 2 and I am Type 1 but my consultant was extremely happy with my recent HbA1c of 52 which was up slightly from last year's 48. I find it hard to understand how one "medical professional" can "scold" a patient for a score of 51 (especially in your circumstances) when my consultant gave me a big pat on the back for a 52. Personally I wasn't happy with the 52 and want to do better but he was more keen to say not to worry about it and not to strive for perfection.
Take your time to recover from your cancer surgery and eat well to nourish your body and don't concern yourself with the comments of someone who clearly has little empathy or understanding

Just focus on getting well none of your figures ring alarm bells given your circumstances that was pretty unhelpful advice they gave you.

Thank you rebrascora for your response. I was taken completely by surprise as I don't usually have any contact with the surgery from one review to the next. I feel like I have enough to deal with at present but will put it on my to do list. 🙂

Thank you Maca. I am astonished that they are suddenly concerned. Normally they don't really seem to care and I have had some very poor advice in the past. I would not have managed my diabetes without the lovely knowledgeable people on the forum. I will always be so grateful to everyone who has helped me. When the current problem is being sorted I'll pay attention to the scores. 🙂

Yes coming here has honestly been a life changer for me, just normal friendly good people.

Phone call again from the surgery. Same woman who is a "health care assistant" said that the GP has given me 6 weeks to get my levels back to acceptable. At the end of the 6 weeks I have to have an HbA1c. I am hoping to get it fixed in that time, but of course I don't know what is coming on the cancer front and what influence that will have. Thank you again for all your support and help. I really appreciate it. This is such a good forum 🙂
