Hi Grogans, welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi I am newly diagnosed with type 1 about 2 months ago. But I live in Dubai the care here is limited to say the least I am just making it up as I go along I have recently been back to the Uk I realise how much care you receive there compared to here. That is why I am desperately trying to get help and advise. Thank you for being here speak to all soon.

Thanks for the update, we'll certainly try our best to help! What sort of insulin are you on and how are you coping with it?

Hi 2 types Nova rapid and Lantus. ok I think i just feel like a pin cushion with testing my blood 4 x a day and insulin, it is getting easier, the bit i am so at a loss is how much insulin to have and what the reading mean what is high reading or a low I have had a reading low as 3 and felt fine I know that is not good thou but what is high ? don't even mention counting carbo i have no idea.

You're on the same as me 🙂 I agree that the thing that is most difficult is knowing what to inject. What information have you been given about insulin doses? Here in the UK there is a well respected course called DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) which teaches, among other things, carbohydrate counting. This method allows you to calculate how much novorapid to take with your meals depending on your own personal requirements (called a ratio) and the amount of carbohydrate in your food. There is an online equivalent here which may be helpful for you as you are abroad:

I'd also look into getting hold of a copy of Ragnar Hanas' Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1. Well, maybe not everything, but for those things it doesn't, you have us! 🙂

p.s. A low reading is considered to be anything below 4 mmol/l and should be treated with some fast acting sugar. A high reading would depend on when you last ate, but you should be aiming for between 4 and 7 mmol/l before eating and try to stay below double figures after eating.

Ah, I see you have US readings on your meter - divide by 18 in order to understand our UK readings. That's pretty sparse information! Get the book, it will help your understanding a great deal. Yes, I have had hundreds of proper hypos since I was diagnosed. Try to avoid them (obviously!), but don't be too scared of them and be prepared - always carry some fast acting sugar, like a small can of full sugar (not diet) coke or some sweets. Most of the time you will recognise the symptoms well in advance - it varies from person to person, but I get sweaty (might be difficult to determine in Dubai!), feel disorientated and shaky. Out of the hundreds I have had, I'd say only about half a dozen have ever caused me real concern, but I still managed to treat them on my own successfully.

Thank you so much for your help I could talk to you all day many thanks
