Patients will now receive specialist diabetes care closer to home as a result of a new initiative by Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

With approximately 35,000 local people diagnosed with the condition, the CCG took the decision to review diabetes care and provide a specialist service – the Diabetes Community Care Extension (DiCE) teams.

From this month (April), working with DiCE teams, local GP surgeries will be able to deal with more varied diabetes queries for patients in Sandwell and West Birmingham. By giving GPs access to consultant advice and working with nurses, this network of knowledge will offer a greater understanding of patient needs.

Previously, patients with diabetes had to go to hospital for specialist advice. Through aligning DiCE teams to GP surgeries, patients will benefit by:
• receiving specialist care closer to home
• avoiding unnecessary trips to hospital
• having access to a consultant’s advice and support through their local GP surgery.

ROFL - they were operating that system in Sandwell (which is basically the West Bromwich area) at least 2 years ago when I was the Lay member of the Qual & Care Commission's inspection of diabetes services in Mids hospitals. Have to say I was impressed. And I am not easily impressed!

What they really mean is, West Bromwich (the poor relation) have persuaded City Hospital (the rich one) to adopt something they didn't invent - cos it's better than what they do !
