Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I orginally posted the following a while back.... on the newbie board and now have a comprehensive update although quite confusing..................

Original Post ====================
Diagnosed type 2 last Friday after second bg test (HB1AC) came back as 7.3...apparently if I was under 7 (6-7) i would be pre-diabetic. I'm sad and disappointed but mainly furious with myself. If I had exercised and ate properly after the first test, I would probably not be classed as DB. My first test was 8.5! so I had a drop of 1.2. Just another 0.3 would've kept me at 'pre'.

I have really ramped up my exercise regime. Jogging 3 miles per day, slowed down my sugar intake. My meter readings are now: Morning (pre-Brekky) usually about 6 or less. 2 hours before meal 5.5. 2 hours after a meal 7.0.

I am on diet and exercise only and still trying to come to grips on how DB is going to impact my life.
End of Original Post =====================

I went back to see my GP to discuss my numbers. They advised me to see the 'Lead Diabetes GP' at my Surgery. We discussed my numbers and she corrected me on a few points.

My original Fasting Test was 8.5. I thought my second test was a hb1ac which came back as 7.2 (explained above). In fact I got it wrong. My first test was a Fasting Test of 8.5 and the second test was also a Fasting Test with a result of 7.2. She also told me that as part of the second test they asked for my Hba1c at the same time. This was was 6.1%.

She then stated that as both Fasting Tests were above 7, I had been categorised as Type 2 (explained above) by original GP. The original GP put me on the register as Type 2 (hence post above), but 'lead GP' then goes on to tell me that as the Hba1c was 6.1% she wants to order a Oral Glucose Tolerance Test to confirm diabetes or not as she does not like to rely on just the two fasting tests. She also said that I should've had the OGTT ordered as soon as I had the two Fastings above 7.... I said to her that I have been exercising etc based on being diagnosed as a Diabetic and that may now give a low/incorrect reading. She said that regardless of the Diet/Exercise, the OGTT will show not what my levels are at that point in time, or my 'average (hba1c) but more importantly how my body is dealing with a Glucose Load. She assured me that this is completely accurate and a real defacto test for Diabetes.

Well....I had the test. On arrival at hospital I had an initial screening of 6.0 (Finger Prick). Then had the first venous blood test and the the OGTT drink. After 2 hours of sitting still in the waiting room had second venous blood taken. Went back to GP a week later and she said...."You have 'Impaired Glucose Tolerance which is a pre-cursor to diabetes. You can change this with continued efforts with Diet and Exercise" and return your body to normal. She warned me that if I don't address my lifestyle, I would develop without doubt, full blown diabetes. She said first confirmed venous reading was 6.5 and second after Glucose Load was 8.7.

The result is that I have been removed from the register (their decision) but I have been advised to attend the GP Clinic again in 6 months so they can 'keep an eye on me'...What a palarva!! (If that's how you spell it)

Very interesting premiere - thank you for posting this. It shows how difficult a diagnosis can be to make sometimes. Obviously, something is going on, but not to the extent that your blood sugar is reaching alarming levels. I believe that the reading after the OGTT would need to be over 11 mmol/l.

Indeed a palaver! But good for you and your positive attitude and efforts with your lifestyle changes. Hope the news in a few months is good!🙂

Thanks.

The Lead GP said that a confirmation would be as follows:

Equal to or greater than 7 (pre-OGTT)

or

Equal to or greater than 11.1 post OGTT (after 2 hours)
