Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
After a wait of nearly 4 weeks I got to see the practice nurse and the GP this week. The GP said that my under active thyroid and diabetes could be a sign that there are serious problems with my immune system. My tests have also shown low blood platelets. Does anyone else have any of these problems? I have been offered a 'flu jab and a pneumonia jab. I have seen the posts about the 'flu jab. Has anyone had the pneumonia one?
Good news is that I have three months to try to control my diabetes with diet and exercise. I am really trying and will keep at it. BG has been in the 'normal' range a few times but as soon as I eat something up it goes above 7.00. I have realised that diabetic patients in my practice are on their own and no one cares too much. There is an attitude of "it is downhill all the way now" for diabetes patients. Thank goodness for some encouragement on this forum. I am so glad to have your support.
 
I have had flu jab every year for about 10 years now and have had no side effects apart from a bit of soreness the first time I had it. I think the symptoms of flu are far worse than anything the jab can do. I also had the pneumonia one about 4 years ago, but you only need one of those.:D Good luck with the D & E.🙂
 
Yup, should think we've all had a pneumonia jab by now! (all us diabetics anyway)

Only year I didn't have my flu jab, guess what? Ill off work for a whole month including over Xmas.

Get em done!

By the way, Thyroid and Type 1 Diabetes are both 'auto-immune' conditions so they go a bit hand in hand although not everyone who has one gets the other, it's not uncommon for us to have both, plus other such conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and I think ?? Addisons is one too. Though a lot rarer.

I'm not entirely sure that T2 D is auto-immune though?

If you are type 2 then it's not an autoimmune problen neither is thyroid unless you have the antibodies. 🙂
 
Thank you for your responses. I'll book up for the jabs. I asked the Dr if it might be LADA, sometimes described as Type 1.5. He replied that this form of diabetes is quite rare so he did not think so and anyway the treatment is the same. I was asking as my unsigned letter giving me my diagnosis just said diabetes and did not specify which type. We have a lot of autoimmune problems in our family. He also said that although he will give me three months grace to try diet and exercise to as he put it "humour" me I will end up on medication and really I should "co-operate".

Does he know what LADA or type 1.5 is? (it's def not rare) Or is he implying that all type 2's end up on insulin?
Ask for a referal to a diabetes consultant if you are not happy with your diagnoses! The sooner you are on the correct treatment the better for you.

Hi, just a quick reply really, ive had both of my Jabs, really since i had a transplant just over a year ago of kidney and pancreas. If they are offered you them then yes id take them, they recommended i have themcos my immune system is supressed due to the drugs im taking to stop rejection.

I also had very low platelets at the beginning of the year with no explanation why really, possibly drug related, after tests and a bit of treatment, they came back up, they went from 220, to as low as 3 in just one month, had two very frustrating weeks in hospital, felt great but wasnt allowed to do anything incase of injury.

Haemotology said as long as they are over 30 they will aloow you out of hospital you have to be carefull, andthey can treat low platelets also, with drugs and trasnfusions if necessary.

Have they done a Bone marrow test yet to see if your producing plateless?

I have an underactive thyroid, diabetes and regularly have low platelets too. The diabetes and thyroid can be controlled, the platelets tend to sort themselves when bloods are repeated, will only be a problem if they don't come back up.

I've never had a pneumonia jab, only the yearly flu jabs.
 
Thank you Howard and Newbs. Good to know that I am not alone. I am feeling fine, so I was a bit upset when the Dr told me I had all these things wrong with me and was pessimistic about the outcome. It has been a lonely road as I don't know anyone who has diabetes, so I really appreciate your advice and to hear of your experiences. Thank you.
