Returned to the Optician today.

Brief background :
  • Diagnosed Nov 16
  • Opticians visit Dec 16 as eyesight went from short sighted to perfect distance vision but blind as a bat reading (I wore glasses for driving/TV for almost 30 years)
  • Eyesight appeared to return to "normal" late Dec 16
  • Hospital retinopathy eye if check January - all good
Today I went for repeat eye test to see if I need new specs. My vision has improved on 2 years ago and I now no longer need glasses for driving - prescription now .5 was 1. My reading vision is still okay which considering my age is good.

Optician asked if she could share my details with the practice as I am not the norm for people with diabetes and she said it would now influence them in sending clients for diabetes check if their eyesight suddenly goes from short to long sighted as normally with diabetes it goes the other way but my eyesight has been stable for 30 years until I reduced my BG in Nov 16. I know I have had blood test done that checked everything up to 10 years ago but I had a pre op check in June 2015 and I need to find out if they checked my BG then.

She took more pictures of my eyes and compared them to 4 months ago/2 years ago etc. and she said they still look very healthy.

So that's it folks - I'm special!

Hi Grogg, I think we talked before about the change to eyesight after diagnosis is was exactly the same, went from needing glasses for distance to crystal clear vision everything close was blurred . It's gone back to the way it was before now but I do miss my super sharp distance vision .

I mentioned it to my DSN who didn't seem to know about it but said it could be the high levels of glucose dehydrating the retina. It's weird ! Good that your optician is taking it seriously! ☺

Yes I did say I had researched on Internet and found others who had similar changes as I was concerned when it happened and she said it's the opposite of what they had been taught that happened and she hadn't encountered or heard about anyone else with this issue.
