Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I had a phone call from my GP practice this afternoon. The call was about a batch of tests that I recently had done at the surgery. Apparently my GP wants to talk to me asap about my ECG and skin biopsy AND my sugar in my blood.
The call ended with the confirmation that we were looking at Type 1 diabetes. I'm already on a lifetimes dosage of Warfarin so that will be able to keep Insulin company. I hate chemicals to be lonely.
Tomorrow is a Friday so I'll tick along until my consultation on Tuesday 26th. I'll be seeing you,Cheers.

Welcome to the Forum. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Hope your appointment goes well. My friend is on lifelong Warfarin too so know what a bind that can be.

Thanks for the quick hello. I don't feel as lonely (if you don't count my dogs in) as I did when typing into this Forum. Genuine thanks.

Welcome to the forum John but sorry you’ve joined the club. The dx
(Diagnosis) must have come as a shock to you.
Feel free to ask questions we’ll do our best to help , we have some very knowledgeable people on here.
As you can by my signature, I don’t like my meds’ to be lonely either :D

Hey - insulin is a natural hormone (well OK so the sort we're all having to use isn't natural LOL) - so I don't class it in my head as a 'drug' - same as I don't class HRT as 'drugs' cos they're just normal female hormones presented in a way the body can cope with.

My ma in law had been on Warfarin for years, but also had to test her BG at least daily and more often when ill as she was Type 2 (and concurrent illness became more & more frequent since she also had terminal bowel cancer) - and never had much trouble at all stopping the flow of blood from her fingers, so don't worry about that aspect. (If you were)

I'd be more concerned about the ECG and definitely about the skin biopsy - diabetes won't kill you once you get treatment for it. But you have to self administer that treatment - so yes, in that way we are ALL alone with our D - but having 'friends' who you don't have to explain things to, cos we all instantly understand your feelings cos we've all been in the place where you find yourself now - and it's just HARD at times. However with time, those feelings diminish and nobody here will think you're bats when at any time you need to just get it off your chest to someone else.

Do please keep us posted and every time you think 'I wonder ...' about any aspect - just ask. Or at least - write it down and give your doctor the list when you walk in!

Thank you for your full welcome. It is true I am worried about my ECG and the skin biopsy but for some reason the whole package of 'stuff' my GP wants to talk to me about is headed by the Diabetes diagnosis. I assume I will be persuaded onto another diet, one that I don't follow now, you know the 'Sea Food' diet. As a child a diagnosis of Scheuermann’s Disease was missed which led to a and a lifetime of being dosed with various pain relief for my Severe Kyphosis.
Hopefully on Tuesday evening I will be able to make sense of my current crop of ailments and will 'boldly carry on'.

I love your philosophy, generally it works for me....but there are those days....I'm sure we all know......

I need to cuddle my dogs and take them out onto the South Downs this weekend. Distract myself with mother nature and her Autumnal coat.

I'm surprised they are leaving you to tick along without insulin with a type 1 diagnosis until Tuesday - or have they put you on a dose ready to be discussed on Tues?. Do you have a blood sugar meter?
With regards to diet, if you go in a multiple daily injection (MDI), otherwise known as basal bolus, the theory is you can eat what you like and adjust your short acting insulin by carb counting to cover what you eat. In practice, most of us moderate our carb intake to a degree. Let us know how you get on on Tuesday and welcome 🙂

Hi again John. TBH if the GP thinks your T1 imo you should be referred to the diabetes clinic at the hospital ASAP as they really are the experts.
My advise is if they don’t automatically refer you, then do ask them to.

As for diet for T1, it’s as Stephknits says. though Most of us on here do limit our carbohydrate intake.
If your given the choice MDI is far more flexible.

How did you come to be diagnosed.

Welcome to the T1 club

It is a difficult thing to master but when you do it is not that bad. It just tires you out and makes your fingers sore by testing.

As the others have said you need to get your GP to refer you to the Diabetes team at your local hospital. They will help you make sense of it and offer support and strategys

I see you are a new comer to the world of Diabetes. Good to have travelling companions.
Yes, definitely. Two weeks definitely not enough to really hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of information, but things have also become more settled at least. I still want to mug someone for a doughnut now, but just not as much!!!

There are some lovely people here and apparently no question is too daft 🙂
