Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am a newbie and totally baffled. Last year my HbA1c was 44 pre diabetic I was told and went on a course re diet etc, Over 6 months I have weird symptoms like sore toes which wont heal and body itching in a personal way and despite a month on a strict diet didn't lose any weight at all. The podiatrist suggested I had another blood test which is now showing 52. My GP doesn't seem to be bothered and suggests I have another test in 3 months. So have a got it or not but it would explain the unexplained symptoms,
Oh by the way I am 70years old and 2 years was diagnosed with the very rare FSH2-MD. If interested you can Google cos too complicated and no ones heard of it not even the GP
So any advice would be good.

Hi and welcome! The personal itching sounds like thrush which may be linked to a higher blood glucose level, as could the healing of your toes, if your gp isn’t helping could you maybe see someone else? Is there a practice nurse you could talk to? Do you test your own blood? If not it sounds like it might be worth getting a kit and doing that.

I have had thrush now and then but its not that. Seen a dermatologist who didn't have a clue what the itching was and tried every cream etc available. If I have diabetes I would almost be pleased as there is a chance I could get rid of the skin probs. I have managed to get a practice nurse to do a blood test tomorrow so we will see how that goes. Can anyone a self testing kit as i see there are loads on Amazon or am I jumping the gun?

Have you been told you're diabetic? If not, get in to see someone and ask why not. A HbA1c test result of 48 and above (as in 52) should get you a diagnoses of diabetes. (Some people are diagnosed at around 100 and above. )
Now, your doctors might not be bothered by your levels (in my area hcp don't care about such a level), even though they've actually diagnosed you as diabetic.

Self testing: the Code Free often gets recommend. It's test strips (Which are single use) are the cheapest.

Hello @mummy welcome to the forum. Obviously we cannot say whether or not you have diabetes, it would be very wrong if us as we or rather most of us are not medically qualified.
It’s good to hear that the nurse is doing more blood tests, hopefully this includes another Hb1ac. I must say I totally agree with @Ralph-YK in post 7.
Though your latest Hb1ac is within the diabetic range (above 48) it is not that bad.

To be honest I am rather shocked that with all your symptoms that the Gp doesn’t seemed concerned , perhaps see another GP or if necessary change Gp practice .

It is unlikely that they will prescribe you a glucose meter and test strips. If you decide to buy one as has already been said , it’s the ongoing cost of the test strips you have to watch.
Often brands in chemists cost above £15 for a pot of 50, which don’t last long when doing in depth testing .
Many self funders on here use this glucose meter as it’s testing strips are around £8 for a pot of 50

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂

For itchy skin conditions I'm recc Diprobase. I swear by it. Only thing that cured my 20 year itch! 😱

im even more confused 2 weeks ago it was 52,had another test on Mon and its now 48,so do I have it or not?

HbA1c of 48?
Ranges for HbA1c are:
30 (?) to 41 are "normal"
42 to 47 is called pre diabetic
48 and above gets you a diagnoses of diabetes (Even if it goes below this you're still down as diabetic).

A HbA1c is an average of 8 - 12 weeks (that's how long the red blood cells last). You've had 2 HbA1c tests within 2 weeks?

You need to have a good conversation with the medical people at you're practice.

The first blood test I had done privately because GP thought it wasn't necc,
The second one was at the GP,the result came thro to make a non urgent apt,so looks like they aren't that interested.

update. One of the Gps rang me today and made me an apt with my own gp on Tues but I have a feeling she wont be very supportive. The GP today said that as my levels are low its unlikely to give me any symptoms so what is? I was hopeful that Type 2 was the cause because nobody else can find any reason for it. Maybe the GP will at least let me see the diabetic nurse at least.
