Hi
@kath3472x and welcome to the forum
🙂
Sorry to hear you haven't been given any advice about what you can eat yet - that must be frustrating, but it may be because it will be completely different depending on which type of diabetes you have.
If you have type 1 then in the long term you will be able to eat anything you want, you will just need to inject enough insulin to cover it (in the short term though, if you don't have insulin, it would be helpful to cut down on some carbohydrates for now).
If you have type 2 you will need to cut down on all carbohydrates - not just the "of which sugars" - so yes, it will include fruit as well as things like cakes and biscuits, but also starchy foods like pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, and cereals. Fat is not an issue for diabetics so unless you have another medical condition which means it's bad for you then you will be able to keep eating fatty foods.
For the time being, I wouldn't go overboard trying to make major changes until you have a definite diagnosis, but it might be a good idea to cut down on some carbohydrates - I would cut out things like dried fruit and fruit juice, jam and honey, which make your blood sugar go up very fast, and things like pre-packed cereals, which are often very high in sugar, and I'd cut down on the other things I mentioned above.
And avoid anything fat-free as it will almost certainly contain lots of sugar!
If you want fruit, I'd go for apples, pears, and berries, as they are lower in carbs than things like bananas, grapes, and tropical fruits.
If you want some ideas of what the type 2s on the forum eat, have a look at the recipe board. I think
@Leadinglights has a link about good diets for type 2s too - just remember if you turn out to be type 1 you won't need to stick with a type 2 way of eating once you get the insulin.
