Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all. I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in December 2009. Im only 20 and been told i have to cut sugar and fats out of my diet as been a right kick in the teeth. I honestly dont think it has sunk in just how serious it can be and the long term effects.
I still continue to eat chocolate and have sugary drinks. Im finding it really hard to cut it out and if im honest i dont know what to do???

People keep on telling me how bad it is but its alot easier said than done :(

Any suggestions??

Nickie xx

Hi Nickie - Sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you are having a bad time.

You really didn't ought to be eating chocolate and sugary drinks because that is only going to make you get much worse.

Diabetes is a very serious disease if treated with disrespect. You really did ought to take things seriously. You just need to start to take control because the complications that can come along are avoidable if you do that.

You can start of by replacing the sugary drinks with the ZERO or Diet types.

However, you need to do much more than that.

Good luck and very best wishes - John

I know a clleague of mine has had a chat with me and its seriously shook me up and gave me the wake up call i need.

He has had 3 heart attacks in the space of 3 years.

I have been thinking a lot and hopefully will be able to get into a routine and be ok.

Thanks very much

Hi Nickie and welcome to the forum - although sorry you have to be here!🙂

My son is type 1 so i dont know huge amounts about type 2 - other than you *can* control it with diet and exercise. Sorry if this sounds obvious - but what seems to be recommended for type 2's is to cut down on high carbs like pasta rice bread cereal and any pastries and high sugar products. But this doesnt mean you can never eat these things again - it just means that you can only eat them in small amounts etc.

Have you been prescribed medication at all? Has the GP said you are overweight - as losing weight can help enormously. What dietary advice have you been given by your GP?

There are people on here who are far more knowledgeable than me and i am sure they will help you with the sorts of foods you can eat without feeling hungry.🙂Bev

Nickie

Well done for having the courage to post on here and being honest about how difficult you are finding it all. It is a shock to find out you have Type 2 diabetes and takes many people a good while to understand for themselves that it is a serious condition with nasty long term complications if we are unable to get it under good control

Basics first tho - diet and exercise are the mainstay of treatment for Type 2 so first step is to replace those sugary drinks with the diet alternatives and to build up your exercise regime gradually. Then do what you can to learn more about your diabetes and how to manage it - many of us swear by Gretchen Becker's book - Type 2 diabetes the first year. Some of us find that we have to really manage our carbohydrate intake to get good results but I think it would be fair to say that most of us have taken some time to get to that stage of understanding

Whatever you do - don't be afraid to ask questions on here and to look through some of the threads for more information. As diabetics, we don't always agree on what works best for each individual but we are full of ideas and suggestions about what might be feasible to try

Best of luck

Any suggestions??

read and print out Maggie Davey's Open letter to a newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic in our Links section as a starting point.
You might also read Wallycorker's description of his diet in the Food section.

Hi Nickie, welcome to the forum.

Hi Nickie, i can certainly empathize with how you're feeling as i was only diagnosed last month. I have quite a sweet tooth aswell although i don't drink sugary drinks. Over the past month i have replaced the sugar cravings i had for chocolate/ cakes etc by eating fruit spread over the day and just make sure i'm not hungry as these times are the hardest and when i tended to reach for the 'goodies. A healthy diet and exercise as mentioned are the key and by taking these on board you'll start to reap the benefits.

best wishes Ness x
